On Saturday, Iga Świątek won her first career Wimbledon title in dominant fashion, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 at SW19.
Świątek’s run at this year’s Wimbledon was nothing short of spectacular, as the former world No. 1 dropped just one set over seven matches en route to her maiden Wimbledon title. Additionally, the win cemented Świątek in the annals of tennis history as the six-time Grand Slam winner recorded just the second “double bagel” in Grand Slam final history in the Open Era.
Following the win, Świątek, who is now the first Polish player to win Wimbledon, spoke with Annabel Croft in her on-court interview, reflecting on the win and a sensational two weeks of tennis:
“It seems super surreal. … Honestly, I didn’t even dream [of this moment] because for me it was just way too far. I feel like I’m already an experienced player, but after winning the slams before, I never really expected this one. So, I want to thank my team because I feel like they believed in me more than I did, and I want to thank my coach who joined this year, and obviously with ups and downs, right now we showed everybody that it’s working.
“Also, to the team that has been with me for many years, I would be nowhere without you, and having your trust and constant support and knowing each other so well, this is the best thing that a player can have, so thank you guys.”
You can see her comments in the interview below beginning at the 28-second mark.
Iga Świątek Offers Kind Words to Anisimova Following Final
While for Iga Świątek Saturday’s final will go down as one of the high points of her already-impressive career, the same likely can’t be said for Amanda Anisimova, who couldn’t seem to find her rhythm despite an impressive two weeks at SW19 that saw her eliminate world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka en route to her first Grand Slam final appearance.
After an emotional Anisimova addressed those in attendance, thanking her family for making the trip out, Świątek offered some kind words to her opponent:
“I want to congratulate Amanda for an amazing two weeks anyways. No matter what happened today you should be proud of the work you’re doing and I hope we’re going to play many more finals here and other tournaments. You have a game for that, so congrats to your team as well.”
While Anisimova, who is now world No. 7 on the WTA’s live rankings, came up short in the final, her run at SW19 is a clear indication that she can hang with the best of the best, regardless of surface.
After returning to the tour in 2024, the first-generation American has produced some of her best tennis over the past two seasons, winning her first WTA 1000 tournament in Qatar back in February, and now reaching her first Grand Slam final.
Looking at the WTA Top 10 Following Wimbledon
As previously mentioned, with her run to the Wimbledon final, Amanda Anisimova has now reached a career high of No. 7 in the world.
Anisimova now finds herself just ahead of Madison Keys in the top ten, while sitting just 306 points behind Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng, who sits at No. 6.
For Iga Świątek, the win moves her to the No. 3 spot on the WTA’s live rankings with 6,813 points, putting her nearly 400 points above Jessica Pegula, who failed to defend 60 points with her first-round exit.
Additionally, Świątek is now less than a thousand points behind world No. 2 Coco Gauff, who has 7,669 points after losing 230 points for her first-round exit.
While overtaking world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who has a whopping 12,420 points, may be out of reach, Świątek is closing in on Gauff, and the No. 2 spot.
