Jacksonville Jaguars‘ quarterback Trevor Lawrence only started 10 games last year before a concussion and a shoulder injury sidelined him for the season. The latter required off-season surgery and on the first day of training camp practice, he said he’s finally feeling good.
“Feel really good. It’s the best I’ve felt in a long time physically,” Lawrence said. “It sucks not playing, not being on the field. That’s what I love to do. Love to play, and you put in all the work in the offseason and through camp, and then to have the season cut short isn’t fun.”
Lawrence went on to say that the missed time gave him a renewed appreciation for his love of football.
“So, it’s given me a really great appreciation for the game and how much, you know, I love it and love being out here,” he continued. “Sometimes you take things for granted when you get to do it every day, and you’re healthy, and you take whether you take your health for granted or playing the game for granted, when that’s taken away for a little bit, you kind of reflect and take a step back.”
Lawrence says rehab has been an arduous process
The road back from injury can often get overlooked by fans because the player is doing all of the hard work behind the scenes. It can be a brutal journey and Lawrence has spent months working to get back on the field to start training camp.
“A lot more, prehab, rehab, therapy stuff on my shoulder, obviously still, you know, after the surgery,” Lawrence said. “But, I think through the injuries I’ve had, you learn things and you try to really stress those areas and put them in different positions and uncomfortable spots, and you train those things to avoid reinjuring the same thing.”
Lawrence suffered the shoulder injury Week 9 at Lincoln Financial Field against the Philadelphia Eagles. He returned a couple of weeks later before suffering a concussion on a brutal hit by Houston Texans‘ linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.
Lawrence knew in January that he’d be ready for Jaguars training camp
Lawrence underwent shoulder surgery back in mid-December of 2024. His arm was in a sling for a bit, but he knew he’d be good to go for the start of the 2025 NFL season.
“I don’t know the exact timeline,” Lawrence said. “I’m starting to do more rehab on the shoulder, starting to move it a little bit, so it’s been good. I’ll definitely be good by the season obviously and I’m hoping for most of OTAs too, but I don’t know.
“I’m going to be smart with it and not rush into OTAs too quickly, but it’s not going to really affect too much of the offseason and hopefully, I’ll start being able to train in the next couple of months.”
Whatever his schedule was, it seems to have worked. Lawrence should be ready to go physically, but the Jaguars will still have to figure out how to win games even when he’s out there. They were a dismal 4-13 last year and a paltry 2-8 in games that Lawrence started. If getting him healthy is the first step, figuring out how to win games will be a big second.
