Jamie Carragher labelled Casemiro’s performance as ’embarrassing’ during the first half of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

United had an opening 45 minutes to forget at Selhurst Park as Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta put Palace two goals in front by the break.

Olise’s goal was the result of an excellent individual run from near the halfway line as the Palace winger jinked past Casemiro before he raced towards United’s box uncontested and finished low past Andre Onana.

Mateta doubled Palace’s lead in the 40th minute as he beat Jonny Evans before firing high past Onana at his near post.

During his half-time analysis for Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Carragher was furious with Casemiro’s poor defending for Olise’s opener and urged United manager Erik ten Hag to sub the Brazilian before the start of the second half.

‘Listen, he’s [Casemiro] is playing out of position tonight, but this is nothing to do with playing out of position, that could be in a holding midfield role,’ Carragher said.

‘I mean that is embarrassing. They need to bring him off. He needs to come off the pitch, honestly.

‘Nothing can be worse than Casemiro playing centre-back in this second half for Manchester United. Put [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka in the middle and bring someone on at full-back.’

Former United winger Ashley Young added: ‘You look at the first goal and it’s crazy the way they’re [United] set up. There are five players out of position.

‘It’s just one run from Olise and he just walks into it.

‘It’s shambolic, to be honest. Casemiro, I don’t know what he’s doing, maybe he thinks that Olise is going backwards, Olise sees he’s coming out to make a challenge and he literally just walks past him, it’s so easy.’
