The 2025 preseason is officially a thing of the past for the New York Jets. Their true work on the roster front begins now, and general manager Darren Mougey is getting a head start to beat the league’s August 26 deadline.
By 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, all 32 teams must trim their rosters from 90 players to 53. New York got their total down by six on Saturday, as a slew of moves was announced directly by the team via X.
Jets Announce Initial Wave of 6 Roster Cuts on Saturday
Below is the full list of initial cuts:
- CB Mario Goodrich
- OT Samuel Jackson
- TE Neal Johnson
- WR Dymere Miller
- DT Fatorma Mullbah
- WR Ontaria “Pokey” Wilson
Expect this list to grow significantly. There’s time left for everyone to be compliant with the NFL’s rule, but doing some of this work early helps both the team and its now-former players gain some clarity. Fresh off a 1-2 preseason slate, head coach Aaron Glenn and his staff got a good idea of who belongs and doesn’t belong on the team with Week 1 of the regular season approaching.
Goodrich, a former Clemson standout, entered the league back in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. Over the years, he’s spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Denver Broncos. He has four career games under his belt and had 8 tackles this preseason.
Jackson is a Central Florida product who signed with the Jets back in late July. Now in his third year, he also has experience in the UFL as a member of the Houston Roughnecks.
Johnson joined New York back in January on a reserve/futures contract. The second-year man recorded 2 catches for 27 yards in the preseason.
A 2024 star at Rutgers, Miller’s rookie stint with New York appears to be coming to an end. With that said, it’s always possible he returns on the practice squad. That’s on the table for any of these players. Miller had a pair of kick returns and one reception in the preseason.
Mullbah had 3 tackles this preseason. He signed with the Jets in May and was a productive player in college at West Virginia.
Last, but certainly not least, Wilson is a promising rookie with CFL experience. This month, he had 3 catches on 4 targets for 38 yards.
Other Positions to Watch With New York’s Cutdown Day Looming
Oftentimes, it doesn’t take long for additional moves to accompany an initial set of them. The Jets will be hard at work ensuring their roster makes the most sense. Age, fit, need and context within the scheme will all be considered. That’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg regarding what Mougey, Glenn & Co. must factor in. Multiple spots stand out as areas to keep an eye on.
First and foremost, quarterback is key. Everyone knows Justin Fields is the Jets’ starter and Tyrod Taylor will be his backup once he’s healthy. Glenn issued pleasant news on the latter front recently. Behind those two, neither Brady Cook nor Adrian Martinez did much to stand out during the preseason. It’s possible both players wind up getting cut.
Secondly, tight end is another offensive position to monitor. Rookie Mason Taylor is the standout of the group, and both Zack Kuntz and Stone Smartt have had their moments as of late. One player who didn’t enjoy a productive summer and could be on the hot seat, however, is Jeremy Ruckert.
Rounding out the offensive positions here is wideout. The top of the room is relatively set in stone, with the trio of Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds leading the way. It appears that rookie Arian Smith and veteran Tyler Johnson are also in good favor. Someone like 2024 third-round pick Malachi Corley desperately needed a good preseason and had the exact opposite. That’s a situation worth awaiting how it plays out.
