Jets Make Surprising Justin Fields Announcement Before Patriots Game

The 2025 season has come to an end for New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields.

Head coach Aaron Glenn announced on Tuesday, December 23, that Fields is being placed on injured reserve. With only two games left in the 2025 regular season, that means Fields’ season is over. When a player is placed on IR, they’re forced to miss at least four games.

“There is only one guy of note that I really want to speak on when it comes to injuries. We are gonna put Justin on IR. We tried to see how we could get this to work, right, but it wasn’t getting as better as we’d like it. So we wanna make sure that we focus on that to make sure we get him better,” Coach Glenn explained.

Coach Glenn Explains the Fields Decision

The former Ohio State product popped up on the injury report with what was described as “knee soreness” several weeks ago. That news came after Fields was benched in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor.

This season, Fields ended up appearing and starting in nine games. He finished with 1,259 passing yards, completed 62.7% of his passes, and had a seven touchdown to one interception ratio.

On the ground, Fields finished with 383 rushing yards, four touchdowns, and averaged 5.4 yards per carry.

A media member asked Coach Glenn if Fields is going to require surgery on his knee.

“I’m going to let the docs [doctors] hone in on that. If he does [need surgery], this would be a great time to get it done. So we can get it knocked out and get himself healthy, but again I don’t wanna place that on him, I just know this, we just want to make sure that he gets this thing healthy and get it ready,” Coach Glenn responded.

Fields Experiment Proves to Be a Massive Failure

This offseason, the Jets inked Fields to a two-year $40 million contract that included $30 million in guaranteed money.

He was soon thereafter crowned as the QB1. Fields struggled mightily throughout the season and was ultimately benched for performance reasons. Now his future with the team is very much in doubt.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini asked head coach Aaron Glenn if he anticipates Fields being back with the team in 2026.

“We will see how that goes. We are focused on New England right now,” Coach Glenn said with a laugh.

Cimini responded, “I had to ask.” Coach Glenn said, “I know you did.”

Coach Glenn’s non-answer is very telling. $10 million of Fields’ salary for next season is guaranteed. An easy answer for Coach Glenn would have been to say he is under contract for next year; of course, I anticipate him being on the team.

Not saying that confirms that Fields is unlikely to be here next year, or at the very least, his future with the team isn’t guaranteed.

Coach Glenn Speaks on What Went Wrong With Fields and the Jets

“I said this last time, and this is for any player that doesn’t have the season that we would like for them to have; it’s always disappointing. So I don’t want to just focus on Justin with this, and I know that was the question that was asked, but any player that we have high hopes for and the season doesn’t go the way we wanted to go, we are always disappointed in that,” Coach Glenn said.
