Jets Provide Significant Update on Quinnen Williams Injury

With the NFL preseason off and running, teams will soon get a first look at how their rosters will perform in an in-game environment. For the New York Jets, who play the Green Bay Packers on August 9, every training camp rep is becoming more important.

Unfortunately for New York, some key players are out of the lineup for the time being. Star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams headlines that group as the month of August begins.

Quinnen Williams Nursing Calf Injury as August Kicks Off

Speaking to the media following Friday’s training camp practice, head coach Aaron Glenn provided an update on Williams. The Jets’ All-Pro pass rusher is dealing with a calf ailment.

“We actually have three guys of note,” Glenn said. “One is Quinnen Williams, he has a calf. It’s precautionary – we want to make sure that this player is going to be good. We know what he’s all about, we know what he can do. Listen, we wanted to hold him out, and we’ll see how that goes.”

As far as timelines are concerned, Glenn believes Williams shouldn’t be out too long.

“I’d say he will be about a week or two,” Glenn said. “And again, he’s had this injury before. He understands exactly how he has to operate and make sure he goes through the process of getting it healed. Again, he’ll be just fine.”

This Williams news can be viewed in a couple of ways. On the bright side, he’ll be ready in plenty of time for the regular season. He indeed has experience nursing a calf injury, as a strain in 2022 saw him miss just the Jets’ following game versus the Detroit Lions. Should Glenn’s timeline pan out, Williams can still get into game shape and maybe even log some preseason snaps if needed.

On the other hand, calf injuries are tricky. Williams, who relies on a unique strength and explosiveness blend, must be careful with his recovery. Allowing him a full allotment of time to get back into the fold seems wise for the Jets and one of their best players.

Other New York Injury Odds & Ends From Training Camp

A few other players were noted by Glenn on the injury front. Two members of the Jets accompanied Williams as being held out of Friday’s practice. Guard John Simpson (back) and safety Malachi Moore (oblique) were on the shelf.

“Next guy, John Simpson, he has a back,” Glenn said. “He’ll be just fine. Again, another precautionary. Holding him out maybe a week or two, with him. And the last guy is our rookie Malachi Moore. He has an oblique strain, so he’ll be just fine.”

Similar to Williams, the nature of Simpson’s injury is a bit concerning. Back issues for 300-plus-pound players always leave some room for worry. With that said, Glenn didn’t seem thrown by the injury whatsoever. It’s paramount that the Jets get Simpson back in the lineup healthy. He played over 1,000 snaps at left guard last year, ranking as Pro Football Focus‘ 18th player out of 136 qualified guards.

Moore, a fourth-round pick, is coming of a stellar closing season to his collegiate career. In 2024 with Alabama, he recorded career-highs in tackles (70) and passes broken up (8). Questionable athletic testing partially contributed to him going on Day 3 of the draft, but he’s a promising piece nonetheless.

Last, but certainly not least, second-year running back Braelon Allen returned to practice. He’s been dealing with a minor knee issue, so Glenn’s glad to have him back on the field.

“Guys that we’re happy to see coming back, you guys saw Braelon out there today,” Glenn said. “He’s moving around well.”
