New York Jets running back Braelon Allen is going to be out for a while.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the grim news on social media.
“Jets RB Braelon Allen, who was ruled out last night with a knee injury, suffered an MCL sprain that will likely land him on Injured Reserve, sources say. Allen is expected to receive additional opinions,” Rapoport revealed.
Allen, 21, has two and a half years remaining on his $4.5 million rookie contract.
Jets Are Down a Piece of the Offensive Puzzle
With Allen likely heading to injured reserve, he will be forced to miss the next four games at a minimum on the schedule.
The next four games for the Jets include a home contest versus the Dallas Cowboys, a trip to London to play the Denver Broncos, a home game against the Carolina Panthers, and a road trip to battle the Cincinnati Bengals. Gang Green then has a bye week after that in Week 9.
Allen Injury Leaves the Jets Thin at Running Back
“I know Braelon Allen had the fumble, but he was starting to find his groove before that and the injury. His role was going to grow,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic explained on social media.
“Now the Jets will have three RBs on the active roster (Breece Hall, Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu), one fullback (Andrew Beck) and a RB on the practice squad (Lawrance Toafili),” Rosenblatt added.
Allen’s Turnover Continued a Horrific Run for the Jets in Week 4
The Miami Dolphins received the ball first on Monday Night Football. They drove down the field and converted on a field goal.
The Jets got the ball and punched the Dolphins right in the mouth. They were in the middle of a 12-play drive that seemed destined to end with a touchdown. Allen took the handoff and sped towards the end zone, but before he could score, the ball got punched out of his hands, Miami ball.
The Jets ended up losing the turnover battle three to nothing. Gang Green lost the game 27-21. Same Old Jets.
Putting the fumble aside, Allen had four carries for 26 rushing yards and averaged 6.5 yards per clip.
Jets Coaching Decision Under Scrutiny
There are a lot of reasons why the Jets are 0-4 on the season through the first month of 2025. One of those is because of some shoddy returns and an inability to hold onto the pigskin.
Xavier Gipson had a costly fumble on a kickoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 that cost the Jets the game. In Week 4, it was the same song, but a different dance. Isaiah Williams fumbled a key kick return that Miami took advantage of.
With all of these problems at returner, the Jets have tried to find creative players on the roster to try back there. One of those players was Allen, who returned one kick against Miami for 24 yards. That was also the play he got hurt on.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY criticized that decision on social media.
Jets RB Braelon Allen is hurt after returning the kickoff. Didn’t like the idea of him running back kicks. He has the job right now because of the Kene Nwangwu injury,” Hughes explained.
Why is Braelon Allen running kicks back? He’s a big guy. He’s not a guy with moves on a kick off like Davis or some of the small quick guys.. and he ran right into those guys! This is so upsetting,” the first female scout in NFL history, Connie Carberg, reacted on X previously Twitter.
