Jets Sign Veteran Running Back in First Move Before Bills Game

The New York Jets are adding some insurance ahead of the regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills.

Gang Green announced on social media that they have signed veteran running back and return specialist Raheem Blackshear to the practice squad.

Info on the Jets Newest Player

Blackshear, 27, entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2022. The former Rutgers and Virginia Tech product spent the first five months of his career with the Bills.

He was then stolen off Buffalo’s practice squad and joined the Carolina Panthers’ active roster. The talented runner spent the next three years of his career with the Panthers.

Most recently, Blackshear has spent time on the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squads in 2025.

Blackshear has appeared in 41 games in his career and has made two starts. With those opportunities, he has toted the rock 52 times for 203 rushing yards. Blackshear has averaged 3.9 yards per carry and has scored three rushing touchdowns.

He has also contributed 16 receptions for 138 receiving yards. Blackshear has truly cut his teeth as a return man at the NFL level.

During his time in the NFL, he has returned 23 punts for 200 yards. Blackshear has also returned 66 kickoffs for 1,734 yards. He hasn’t scored a touchdown on special teams so far in his NFL career.

The Jets list Blackshear at 5-foot-9, and he weighs 190 pounds.

A Potential Hint of What Is to Come

The Jets are 3-13. Why did they add a player to the roster? Isn’t that just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?

Well, this could be an indication of an injury situation brewing on 1 Jets Drive.

After the Week 17 blowout loss to the New England Patriots, head coach Aaron Glenn revealed some key injuries.

Running back Isaiah Davis was set to enter the NFL’s concussion protocol. Star tailback Breece Hall was battling a knee injury.

When AG spoke on Monday, December 29, he didn’t provide any new information on the injury situation.

It is very difficult in today’s day and age to suffer a concussion, clear the NFL’s five-step concussion protocol, and be ready for the next game. So Davis’ status is very much up in the air.

After the game, Hall quieted a lot of the concerns about his knee injury. ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed on social media that Hall said he was “fine” and that he didn’t think he would need any additional “testing” to check out his knee.

Beyond Your Control

The Jets worked out several running backs on Tuesday, December 30.

However, one player was unable to attend the proceedings. NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed on social media that Sincere McCormick “was scheduled to work out for [the] Jets this morning, per league source, but got stuck at Chicago due to [a] cancelled flight to New York.”

Before McCormick had a chance to reschedule his flight or find an alternative path, he was already out of luck. The Jets held the workout with the running backs in attendance, made a decision, and are moving forward with Blackshear.

It’s a tough world out there.
