Briggs, 23, entered the league as the No. 243 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft. He spent his first two collegiate seasons at Virginia and his final three seasons at Cincinnati.

During that time with the Bearcats, Briggs crossed over for one season with current Jets superstar Sauce Gardner in 2021.

Jets Add Another Big Man to the Defensive Line

“Briggs (6-1, 313) appeared in six games for Cleveland last season, registering 13 tackles and 2 QB hits. A seventh-round pick (No. 243 overall) of the Browns in 2024, Briggs played collegiately at Virginia (2019-20) and Cincinnati (2021-23) and registered 170 tackles and 12 sacks,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen wrote in the press release.

Briggs is under contract for the 2025 season with a $960,000 base salary, per Spotrac.

Insider Warns to Keep an Eye out for More Trades Like This on the Horizon

“Expect more trades like this in the coming week — players on the roster bubble who might get cut getting dealt for late-pick swaps, so the acquiring team secures them instead of relying on waivers,” NFL Insider Ari Meirov explained on social media.

Social Media Reactions to Jets Newest Addition

“Just did some research on Jowon Briggs: Squatted 700 pounds and did 42 reps on the bench [and] toured the United States as a member of an acapella group in college (still a member),” NYJ Matt posted on social media.

“DT Jowon Briggs: 6-1, 313. A 7th round pick in 2024 by the Browns. Played 6 games, 133 defensive snaps, 13 tackles, 1 TFL. Could be an indication that defensive tackle Byron Cowart (ankle) will be out an extended period. Jets are thin at DT,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini speculated.

Briggs has made some plays this preseason that should excite Jets fans.
