Joao Pedro is set to miss Chelsea’s Premier League match against Brentford on Friday, according to reports in Brazil.

The 24-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers under Xabi Alonso with three goals and an assist in four Premier League games so far and was also named as the division’s Player of the Month for August.

However, Pedro was not part of Chelsea’s open training session earlier this week ahead of their Premier League game against Brentford on Friday night.

On Wednesday, Pedro also withdrew from Brazil’s squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Australia and India, and was replaced by Fluminense’s Matheus Martinelli.

According to ESPN Brasil, Pedro suffered a knee sprain during the 2-2 draw with Hull City last Saturday.

The report adds that after reporting the discomfort in his knee, Pedro was examined at a clinic in London on Tuesday and the recommendation is that he is given a rest period of at least three weeks.

The results of Pedro’s scan were also forwarded to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) after he was initially called up by Carlo Ancelotti for the upcoming international break.

After playing Brentford on Friday, Chelsea’s next fixture is a Premier League game at home to Bournemouth on October 10.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Xabi Alonso said that it was a ‘possibility’ that Pedro could play against Brentford but refused to disclose the extent of the forward’s injury.

‘In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday so I prefer to be cautious and we will wait until tomorrow to take the final decision on every player,’ Alonso said.
