Former All-Star guard John Wall—now working as an analyst for Amazon Prime Video’s NBA broadcast—believes the Los Angeles Lakers have shown encouraging signs during their recent run, but still face key questions heading into the postseason.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Heavy Sports, Wall pointed to the Lakers’ evolving identity as a reason for optimism—while also highlighting areas that could determine their playoff ceiling.
“I think it’s been great,” Wall said.
John Wall Praises Lakers’ Recent Run, Offensive Structure
The Lakers have surged at a critical point in the season, finding rhythm offensively and redefining roles within the lineup.
Wall noted that the team’s offensive hierarchy has become clearer, particularly in late-game situations with Luka Doncic taking on the closing role.
“Luka has been playing MVP-level all year,” Wall told Heavy Sports. “We know when it gets to crunch time, he’s closing.”
That structure, combined with improved spacing and playmaking, has helped stabilize the Lakers’ offense as they prepare for the postseason.
LeBron James’ Role Adjustment Key to Lakers’ Success
GettyLeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers dives for a loose ball as Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets watches during the second half of a game at Crypto.com Arena on March 14, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
Wall also pointed to LeBron James’ evolving role as a positive development.
Rather than overlapping with Doncic and Austin Reaves, James has adapted within the system—allowing the team to operate with greater balance while preserving his impact in key moments.
“It’s been great,” Wall said. “They have proven it can work.”
Lakers’ Defensive Improvement Key to Recent Surge
While Wall raised concerns about the Lakers’ defense, the team has shown measurable progress during its recent run.
During a 15-2 surge in March, the Lakers improved their defensive rating to No. 10 in the league after ranking 23rd before the stretch—highlighting a significant turnaround on that end of the floor.
That improvement has played a major role in the team’s late-season momentum and positioning heading into the playoffs.
John Wall Raises Key Concern About Lakers’ Defense
Despite that progress, Wall still views defense as the biggest question facing the team against elite competition.
“The biggest thing everybody worries about for them is, can they defend?” Wall said.
He also pointed to perimeter shooting consistency as another factor.
“Are they going to be able to knock down outside shots consistently?” he added.
That will be tested when the Lakers face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder twice in the next five days, beginning Thursday.
Lakers’ Playoff Outlook Hinges on Consistency
For Wall, the Lakers’ ceiling comes down to sustainability.
“It’s about whether they can continue to play at that level,” he said.
While the team has shown flashes of contender-level play, maintaining that execution against top-tier opponents will be the true test.
John Wall Balances Analyst Role With Community Impact
Even as Wall builds his presence as a national NBA analyst, he remains active off the court through the John Wall Family Foundation.
Recently, the foundation hosted a Community Appreciation Celebration in Washington, D.C., bringing together residents, partners and local organizations for a series of outreach events focused on mentorship, education and direct support.
“For me, it’s always been important to be more than just a basketball player,” Wall said.
John Wall Sees Lakers in Wide-Open Title Race
While Wall ultimately picked the Boston Celtics as his title favorite, he emphasized that the championship race remains wide open.
“I think it’s a lot of teams that can compete,” he said.
That includes the Lakers—if they can sustain their defensive improvement while maintaining offensive efficiency.
If those elements come together, Wall believes the team has the potential to remain a factor deep into the postseason.
