It was a tumultuous week for Justin Fields.
Fields was thrown under the bus by the New York Jets owner, Woody Johnson. He had been performing at a poor level, and his job security was very much in question.
In Week 8, Fields put all of that aside to help deliver a thrilling 39-38 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. It was the first win of the Jets’ season in 2025.
“It has been a lot for me: emotionally [and] spiritually. When I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying. Not because we won, but just because of the goodness of God. Just how everything worked for the greater good, and everything that I had been through this past week, everything that we have been through as a team these past seven weeks, it was a lot of ups and downs,” Fields explained on Sunday, October 26.
“I mean, shoot, yesterday I was praying, praying like crazy, just for a win. I’m going to get pretty vulnerable right here, but this week I found myself in my closet crying, on the ground, laying down. Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles, I felt like I was built to handle that … I had just gotten a text from my sister and my step mom, and it was just an encouraging text on keep going and keep spreading the faith … It was just a sign from God for me to keep going and that I’m in the right place,” Fields continued.
Fields Balled out When People Least Expected It
It appeared that the Jets were poised to make a quarterback change.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed at the beginning of the week that head coach Aaron Glenn was leaning toward naming Tyrod Taylor his starting quarterback.
Yet Taylor was unable to play because of a knee injury. That opened the door for Fields to play just days after getting roasted by the team’s multi-billion-dollar owner.
Fields responded emphatically.
He completed 66% of his passes, going 21-of-32 for 244 passing yards, with one passing touchdown and no turnovers. Fields contributed another 31 yards on the ground.
The Jets put up 39 points and scored multiple touchdowns. Gang Green finished with 37 rushing attempts for 254 rushing yards, averaging 6.9 yards per carry, and scored twice on the ground.
Head Coach Aaron Glenn Strongly Defends His Quarterback
After the game, head coach Aaron Glenn heaped praise on Fields.
“I have said this on a number of occasions that who he is as a person, his faith, and the way that he goes about his business, like he was primed to be able to do something like this. He is primed to be able to handle situations like this. It’s so unfair to him, it really is, that he gets criticized so much, but on the other hand, I told him: being a high pick, being a quarterback, especially in the New York area, criticism, responsibility, and expectations follow you. Some of it is unwarranted, I will say that, some of it is unwarranted, but we understand. A lot of it has to go with being 0-7. So he is a perfect person to handle everything that has been thrown at him. He is a special person,” Coach Glenn said.
The Jets Can Breathe and Kick Their Feet Up
Gang Green is 1-7. There is still plenty wrong with this team. Folks will be yelling on social media about the wide array of issues.
However, for now, the Jets can enjoy a win for the first time this season. Next week is a bye for this team.
Is there quarterback drama? Who will start after the bye? The Jets have more questions than answers.
For now, the team can turn down the outside noise, breathe, get healthy, and enjoy some time away because they earned it.
