Lakers Could Lose Top Free Agent to Clippers: Report

The Los Angeles Clippers have emerged as a dark horse destination for impending free agent LeBron James, who could leave the Los Angeles Lakers this summer after eight seasons with the Purple & Gold franchise.

Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and Tim Bontemps, there’s a likelihood that the Clippers could offer James a more lucrative deal than the Lakers, who are expected to pursue younger free agents that fit in Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves’ timeline.

“The idea of LeBron in an LA Clippers uniform is hard to fathom, even to James.”

“…However, if James played for the Clippers, he could get all the same off-court benefits as staying with the Lakers. He could also theoretically make more money.

“Several team personnel around the league speculated that if the NBA’s investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s Aspiration endorsement deal ended up with Leonard’s contract being voided as a punishment, James could sign with the Clippers for more than the Lakers would offer him.”

LeBron James Free Agency: Clippers?

The report also highlighted James’ close ties with Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue as a possible reason that “The King” might consider playing for the Lakers’ city rivals.

“The Clippers are coached by Tyronn Lue, with whom James won a championship in 2016 with the Cavaliers.

“James advocated for the Lakers to hire Lue in 2019, and the two maintain a strong rapport.”

The ESPN report named the Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets as other possible LeBron free agency destinations.

The report ruled out the possibility of James signing on a veteran minimum deal.

“In talking to sources about what James might do, conversations often focused on how much money he would be willing to play for after two decades of making the maximum or close to it,” read the report.

“Will he play for the midlevel exception? For the minimum?” one scout asked. “A big part of this is knowing what he will be willing to do [financially].”

Lakers Have Busy Offseason

The Lakers are projected to have over $50M in cap space this summer, and that’s even after paying impending free agent Austin Reaves a five-year deal north of $200M.

The Rob Pelinka-led front office is not expected to spend much of its precious cap space on James, another impending free agent, and instead prefers to pursue athletic wings via free agency or trades. Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers could target the likes of Andrew Wiggins, Tari Eason, Tobias Harris, Quentin Grimes, Dean Wade and Peyton Watson to shore up their wing depth for the 2026-27 season.

If the Lakers and James are unable to come to terms on a new contract, several insiders expect the 41-year-old to return home to Cleveland to play out his final season.
