Liam Coen Uses One Word to Describe Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars stumbled a bit at home on Sunday in a loss to the visiting Seattle Seahawks. The penalty-filled 20-12 loss dropped the Jaguars to 4-2 on the season and one game behind the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said after the foot-shooting loss that the team right now is simply undisciplined.

“It’s an undisciplined operation at the moment,” Coen said after the game. “What’s standing in our way? Right now, it’s us.”

Coen specifically wasn’t overly thrilled with the team’s effort on the defensive side of the ball.

“We’ve got to heat ’em up,” he continued. “Maybe look at, all right, do we need to send a little bit more. Just didn’t get enough pressure at all. I thought they did a nice job at times of being balanced, right? Like they were able to run it effectively enough. It was kind of a weird game. You look up at times, and you’re, like, how are we losing? From a first down standpoint, all of that, and I think they had 53 yards rushing at one point in the second half or whatever it was.”

Liam Coen said pressure on the quarterbacks was the difference

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was pressured 33 times, while Seahawks‘ quarterback Sam Darnold only felt heat 11 times. I’m not a mathematician, but it seems like that would be three times the amount of pressure.

“So, it just felt weird,” Coen said. “They hit enough explosives, and we didn’t. That’s the reality is we didn’t get after their quarterback. They got after ours. They hit a couple big plays in the pass game, and we did not. So, I don’t think either team probably ran it as well as we’ve been running the football. We did come out with a mindset of us wanting to throw the ball, but we’ve got to get after their quarterback more, as they got after ours.”

Lawrence was sacked a whopping seven times for 49 yards, exceeding his career high (5). That makes it really difficult to sustain drives.

“That’s part of playing quarterback in the NFL,” Lawrence said. “It’s a tight pocket back there. Those guys on the other side of the ball get paid a lot of money to rush the passer. That’s their job.

“You’ve got to play through it. We’ve got to clean it up.”

Liam Coen’s team didn’t generate any turnovers

The Jaguars‘ defense has played really well as of late, making plays and forcing turnovers.

On Sunday, they didn’t get any takeaways. While they didn’t turn the ball over themselves on offense, the lack of turnovers hindered the offense’s ability to get a short field and score points.

“That’s our life blood,” cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. “We need turnovers. We need turnovers to win games.”

The Jaguars will try to get more turnovers when they face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7. Lucky for them, they probably won’t have to deal with all-world wide receiver Puka Nacua, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
