Lions Confirm Big Change for QB Jared Goff as Season Starts

The Detroit Lions are heading into what will hopefully be an exciting year for them and one that makes everyone in the Motor City forget about how the team fell early in the playoffs to the Commanders last season. For what it’s worth, the Commanders loss was an upset, but this season, people are already noticing that Jayden Daniels is an elite talent, so perhaps the Lions underestimated this budding talent at the time.

But, they won’t underestimate anyone this season, and the Detroit Lions seem ready to rock. This time around, franchise quarterback Jared Goff will be entering his fourth season with the team, so at this point, he’s a Detroit veteran. He joined the Lions through a trade, of course, with the Los Angeles Rams.

When a player has been around for as long as Goff and with one franchise, things can get stale. But, that’s not happening in Detroit, because this season, he’s taking on somewhat of a new role.

More Power for Jared Goff With the Detroit Lions

Goff is entering his fourth year with the Lions and 10th in the NFL. Last season, he was No. 2 among all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards (4,629), completion percentage (72.4) and passer rating (111.8). He was also No. 4 with 37 touchdown passes. It’s a wonder his fantasy stock isn’t higher, really.

A change for Goff is that this season, he’s going to have more “ownership of the offense at the line of scrimmage,” according to Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ website, as noted in a Thursday, September 4 piece.

“I really try to see how much I can handle every week, and I think it’s kind of – I try to ask for more, ask for more, ask for more, and it’s kind of their job to governor that,” Goff said in a presser. “Ultimately we’ve done a good job over the past handful of years doing that and then this year it’s kind of ramped up a little bit, which is great and I’ve owned it.”

He added, “I’m in my 10th year and feel like there’s certain things I can help with. Johnny’s been awesome listening as well as giving me feedback when he disagrees with something that I think, and I think that’s important.”

So, Goff is one piece of this solid lineup that the Lions have  this season. While the preseason showed some places where the Lions could improve on depth, their first string is looking good.

A Solid Showing for Lions QB Jared Goff

Goff had some fantastic stats last season, and that’s set him up well for this season. In a piece published on June 27, Mason Cameron of PFF names the top quarterbacks in the NFL going by their time to throw last season. Goff made the tally for one of the top 10 quarterbacks to throw over 2.5 seconds, coming in at No. 9.

As for who’s No. 1, it’s Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens with a 95.0 passing grade. Goff is No. 9 with a 77.5 passing grade.

Cameron even singled out Goff to give him props, noting that the player “continues to make strides in this facet. The Lions quarterback may not extend plays like some other names on this list, but he knows how to buy time for route concepts to develop downfield.”

Let’s hope Goff shows off those chops on the field this season. The Motor City is hoping for a championship for their first time ever as a franchise. Reach out with your thoughts on the Lions this season.
