Lions QB Jared Goff Gets Good News Before Season Opener

The Detroit Lions are kicking off their 2025-26 season, and those in the Motor City are at a fever pitch when it comes to the excitement surrounding the team. For two seasons now, the Lions have come so close to getting to the big game for the first time in franchise history. Two seasons ago, they fell in the NFC Championship to the 49ers, and last season, they lost early in the playoffs to the Commanders. So, they’ve come so close, but no cigar yet.

Those who have been following the Lions for years are super passionate about this team, and they’ll be with Detroit for life. Now, the Detroit Lions still have a solid roster of players, and they have a chance to make history this season.

Heading into the new season, head coach Dan Campbell is without his offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. But, he still has general manager Brad Holmes and franchise quarterback Jared Goff. For Goff, it’s really like the world is on his shoulders to deliver.

Jared Goff Quarterbacks Rankings for 2025-26

Goff is considered a fantastic quarterback, so he stands near the top of many quarterback rankings, which is good news. It’s nice to see a Motor City signal-caller get respect. In PFF’s tally of the best quarterbacks of 2025, they have Goff on “Tier 3a: Solid starters who have flashed high-end play” and ranked No. 9. He could be higher, but we’ll take it.

“Goff has piloted one of the NFL’s most productive offenses over the past two seasons, earning an 84.8 passing grade over that span, the seventh-best in the league,” John Kosko states in the May 2025 feature. “We’ll soon find out how much of that success was tied to Ben Johnson, now the Bears’ head coach, but the results speak for themselves: Goff has been a top-10 quarterback over the last two years.”

Nick Shook of the NFL has his roster of the best quarterbacks for Week 1, and he has Goff in Tier 2 and No. 11. He’s actually above Jalen Hurts, which is wild.

“Jared Goff spent the 2024 season at a well-deserved higher spot in my rankings,” he notes, “but I’m bracing for a dip in production now that Ben Johnson has left for the Chicago sideline.”

In a survey of  league executives, coaches and scouts by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler in July, Goff is ranked No. 8. “Goff’s success has come with two of the game’s best playcallers, Sean McVay and now-Bears head coach Ben Johnson,” he states. “Now, he must prove he can do it without them, and his career adaptability suggests he’ll be up to the challenge.”

More Responsibility for Jared Goff With the Detroit Lions

Goff is entering his fourth year with the Lions and 10th in the NFL. Last season, he was No. 2 among all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards (4,629), completion percentage (72.4) and passer rating (111.8). He was also No. 4 with 37 touchdown passes. It’s a wonder his fantasy stock isn’t higher, really.

This season, Goff is going to have more “ownership of the offense at the line of scrimmage,” according to Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ website, in a piece published on Thursday, September 4.

It will be great to see Goff take control on the field. Hopefully the Detroit Lions can get over the hump and go all the way this season.
