A last-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty rescued Manchester United as they beat Burnley 3-2 to get their first win of the 2025/26 season.

United twice took the lead but were pegged back by the Clarets before the captain stepped up to the spot and scored to ease the pressure on Ruben Amorim.

A disastrous Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town piled the pressure on Amorim with some suggesting this Premier League clash was make or break for the head coach.

Sprits were lifted in the first-half as the Red Devils dominated and created chance after chance, but could only find the back of the net once when Casemiro’s header hit the crossbar and bounced in off Josh Cullen.

The mood in Old Trafford was soured however when Matheus Cunha hobbled off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury before Mason Mount was withdrawn at the half-time.

Burnley emerged from the break a different side and quickly equalised, only for Bryan Mbeumo to almost instantly restore the home side’s lead, his first league goal since his £71m transfer from Brentford.

But yet again a goalkeeper howler cost United dear, as Altay Bayindir parried the ball into the path of Jadon Anthony who prodded in to make it 2-2.

United were awarded a penalty in the first-half which was overturned by VAR but in injury-time their fortunes reversed as they won a spot-kick after Anthony brought down Amad Diallo on the edge of the box.

The pressure was on Fernandes after he blazed his penalty over the bar during last week’s draw at Fulham but the skipper made no mistake this time, squeezing his effort past Martin Dubravka.

The win moves United up to ninth and eases the pressure on Amorim though he looked far from happy as he left the pitch at full-time.
