A defender like his old man, Chris plays for Axminster Town in the South West Peninsula League.

Last night, the 39-year-old helped Devon-based Axminster to a 2-1 victory over Dorset side Bridport.

Following his goal-scoring performance, McGrath was awarded man of the match.

Axminster subsequently posted a snap of their veteran defender being given his award by club president Les Bounds.

Proud father Paul also posted the image, writing to his 211,000 X followers: “Very proud of my son Christopher yet again getting man of the match last night @Axminstertownfc V @Bridportfc.

“Brilliant game well done to everyone involved.”

Upon seeing the image, fans couldn’t help but point out the likeness.

One wrote on social media: “Had to look twice, image of a young Paul McGrath. Congratulations Christopher.”

While a second asked: “That’s your son? Thought it was you!”

A third echoed: “Well done Christopher. And yes, the likeness is uncanny.”

And another added: “Bloody hell thought it was you collecting the award for him Paul.”

Chris began his career at Liverpool, before stints at Chorley and Leigh RMI.

He subsequently moved to the South West, and in addition to Axminster has played for Taunton Town, Bideford, Bridport, Tiverton Town, Barnstaple and Frome Town.

Amazingly at Taunton, Chris played alongside his step-son Callum in 2017.

During a match against Weston-super-Mare he lined up in an unfamiliar midfield role, with Callum being deployed on the ring wing.

Following the incredible experience, Chris said: “It’s not something that many people get to do, but I was fortunate enough to play with my dad and for history to repeat itself tonight is great.

“Hopefully, if I can keep playing for a couple more years, it might happen again.”

Paul played 178 times for Man Utd between 1982 and 1989, helping the Red Devils to FA Cup success.

He went on to join Aston Villa, for whom he made 191 appearances and won two League Cups.

Having been named Villa’s Player of the Year five times, he eventually left in 1996 to join Derby County, spending a season at the Baseball Ground before finishing his career with a short stint at Sheffield United.
