It’s been a relatively slow offseason to this point for the New York Mets, and just seven weeks remain in the offseason before MLB players have to start reporting to Spring Training.
The Mets have lost the likes of Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo, and Pete Alonso this offseason, which is a lot of production to lose, but New York hopes to get that back by making a big splash signing for either Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker.
However, David Stearns could also think about pulling off a savvy trade for an outfielder that would cost much less than either Bellinger or Kyle Tucker. Could former first overall pick Mickey Moniak be a potential target?

Mets Trade Idea Lands Mickey Moniak
In his hypothetical trade idea, the New York Mets land the outfielder they need in the Rockies’ Mickey Moniak, and in exchange, New York sends Colorado Brandon Sproat and prospect A.J. Ewing.
A recent piece by MLBTradeRumors.com outlines the Rockies’ outfield options and weighs which players could be tradeable. Here is what writer Anthony Franco had to say about Moniak:

“Moniak is coming off his best year at the plate. Signed to a $1.25MM contract after being released by the Angels in Spring Training, the lefty hitter popped a career-high 24 homers for Colorado. He batted .270/.306/.518 across 461 trips to the dish. Moniak made hard contact (a 95 MPH+ exit velocity) on 45% of his balls in play, easily the best mark of his six MLB seasons.”
As for what the Rockies would get in return, Sproat seems to be an MLB-ready arm, as he boasted a 4.79 ERA in his first 20 MLB innings in 2025.
Moniak is a former first overall pick from back in 2016, and while he’s hard a hard time finding a stable home, he’s still just 27, and might have found something with his swing in ’25. Moniak has 56 career home runs over parts of six MLB seasons, and is still arbitration-eligible for a few more seasons.

The Mets Still Need An Outfielder
What makes this trade idea even feasible is the fact that the New York Mets desperately need an outfielder or two. After trading away Nimmo and losing Cedric Mullins to free agency, the Mets’ top (and really only) options include Juan Soto and Tyrone Taylor.
Jeff McNeil was also traded a few weeks ago, which only further highlighted the need.
As noted, there is still time left in MLB’s hot stove season, but the Mets are putting themselves in jeopardy by not acting quickly, and they could suffer as a result of their lack of urgency.
But even if the Mets do lose out on Tucker and Bellinger, there’s plenty of production on the trade market (I.e, Moniak) like Luis Robert Jr. and Jarren Duran. Or the Mets could decide to sign a lower-cost free agent outfielder like Harrison Bader to at least attempt to patch what is a very thin outfield.
It’s also important to note that Starling Marte is a current free agent, and he could be a name that returns to Queens for the 2026 season.
