The New York Mets lost the momentum they gained during their recent series victory over the Seattle Mariners, as they lost their latest series against the Washington Nationals after suffering a blowout 9-3 loss in the rubber match on Thursday. With the team struggling as their playoff push begins to heat up, fans are urging the front office to make a big move involving one of its top prospects.
With the pitching staff needing some reinforcements, New York promoted one of their top pitching prospects, Nolan McLean, earlier this week and watched him carve up the Mariners in his first professional start. After seeing the success McLean enjoyed, fans believe it’s time for another star pitching prospect, Brandon Sproat, to find his way to the majors.
Mets Urged to Promote Brandon Sproat
McLean is one of the most highly regarded prospects in baseball, as he is the Mets’ No. 3 prospect and the No. 37 overall prospect in the league according to MLB.com. He delivered the goods in his MLB debut, hurling 5.1 shutout innings against Seattle, giving up two hits and four walks while striking out eight to lead the Mets to victory.
After seeing McLean dominate, fans think Sproat could make a similar impact for New York. While he’s not a top 100 prospect like McLean, Sproat has quite a bit of upside too, as he’s currently the team’s No. 5 prospect. In 2025, Sproat has a 7-6 record with a 4.24 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 110.1 innings of work.
In his last nine starts, Sproat has done his best to prove that he’s ready for the majors, posting a 2.05 ERA while striking out 57 batters. With several other pitchers beginning to show signs of wear and tear, Joe Pantorno of AMNY explained why now may be the perfect time for the Mets to call up Sproat to the big show.
“The Mets are in a 16-game-in-16-day stretch that will stretch an unreliable rotation heading into the final legs of a playoff push, and expanding to a six-man unit should be something for president of baseball operations David Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza to consider,” Pantorno wrote.
“There would have to be some roster gymnastics to fit Sproat on the roster, most likely in the DFA’ing of a reliever like the struggling Ryne Stanek or the recently demoted-to-the-pen Frankie Montas.”
Should the Mets Promote Brandon Sproat?

With rosters set to expand on Sept. 1, the Mets will be able to bring in some reinforcements very soon. However, they may not be able to wait that long in order to promote Sproat. Not only has he been dominating in the minors, but New York’s pitching staff needs help now as they attempt to hold onto their playoff position in the National League wild card race.
For now, New York is rolling with just McLean in the majors, but it may not be long until Sproat joins him in the big leagues, especially after their disappointing series loss to the Nationals. The Mets will have to pick themselves up quickly, though, because they begin another important series against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.
