Murray Not Sure if He’ll Play Against Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts should be in a relatively good mood these days. They are 4-1 after five games and their quarterback is playing like one of the best in the NFL. Seriously, Daniel Jones has been more than they could have ever hoped when they were playing “Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe” with him and Anthony Richardson this offeason.

The Arizona Cardinals, who travel to Indianapolis on Sunday to take on the Colts, cannot be so happy. They are a very Arizona Cardinals 2-3 this year and their “star” quarterback Kyler Murray has the questionable designation on the injury report heading into Week 6.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter says his status is up in the air for Sunday.

“Big questions in Arizona surrounding their quarterback, Kyler Murray, who’s dealing with a foot injury,” Schefter said on Thursday morning’s Get Up. “Didn’t practice yesterday. They’re saying he’s day-to-day. He came back in and finished the game against Tennessee, so that usually is a sign that a player is able to play the next week. But, if he can’t, Jacoby Brissett would come on and start against his former Colts team in Indianapolis this weekend.”

Ian Rapoport has similar injury news on Kyler Murray

As Schefter noted, Murray did return to the game last week against the Tennessee Titans. It’s great news that he was able to experience the crushing defeat right from the field.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says that Murray himself doesn’t seem all that confident that he’ll be a go at 1 p.m. against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“For the Arizona Cardinals, Kyler Murray, their starting quarterback, is dealing with a foot sprain,” Rapoport said on “Good Morning Football.” “Did not practice yesterday. Murray was asked after the game how this foot injury would affect his status, said simply, ‘We’ll see.’ Not a great sign that he wasn’t able to go on Wednesday, but not considered to be a major injury.”

Cardinals offensive coordinator says Kyler Murray’s injury had an effect on play calling

Murray left the field against the Titans last week but did return to the game. Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing had some decisions to make on Sunday as to play calling when Murray returned.

“It didn’t have a huge effect on (play calling),” Petzing said. “But there’s definitely things on the call sheet that you’re saying, ‘All right, we’ve gotta kinda backburner that’ or, ‘We’ve gotta stay away from that.’

“That’s definitely part of when a guy’s dealing with something like that.”

If Murray is able to play against the Colts, one has to wonder how Petzing will create the game plan. Go with the if-he’s-out-there-he’s-fine approach? Or the better-safe-than-sorry angle?

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said that if Murray can’t go, Brissett will be fine to start against the Colts.

“He’s a true pro,” Gannon said. “… The quarterback position’s the hardest position in sports and to know that you’re one play away from your role changing, you really do gotta be on the details, like you’re the starter.

“He loves to practice, he loves to prepare, he loves to play.”
