New Cowboys Coach Already Getting Big Prediction

Speaking late last month at the NFL owners meetings in Arizona, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that, in the end, the biggest acquisition the team may have made to improve its defense in 2026 is not big-ticket items Rashan Gary or Jalen Thompson. It’s the new coordinator, Christian Parker, who has come aboard to replace Matt Eberflus after an epically poor 2025 season in which Dallas rated as the worst defense in the league.

That’s not necessarily what fans wanted to hear. Heck, it’s not really what Parker wanted to hear–as bad as Eberflus was at the job last year, the issue for this defense was one of personnel, first and foremost. The Cowboys need better players, and no doubt they have added at least three new starters to the mix, with more possibly coming in the draft. But they did not reel in the star-level player so many thought they’d get.

Cowboys’ Christian Parker in a ‘Win-Win’

But the Cowboys do have Parker, the new 34-year-old defensive coordinator who arrives from the Eagles, where he was the defensive backs coach.

Said Jones when asked whether Parker was the biggest defensive addition of the offseason: “He certainly is right there as a contender. He is. He’s impressive. He was impressive in interviews and he’s been impressive to work with. It’s a great win-win.

“We appreciate all he’s bringing to the table, from where he is — by the way, I can say that about several of the other position coaches as well — but he has a great chance to look good, because he’s not coming in with a Super Bowl defense. And should he end up with one, then he’ll look like one of the greatest defensive minded coaches there is.”

Cowboys Invested in Defense

And that’s potentially both a blessing and a curse for the Cowboys and head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Already, the team has bolstered its front and could have one of the better offensive lines in the league. If healthy, with DeRon Bland back and Shavon Revel putting his rough rookie year behind him, the Cowboys could have a much improved cornerback situation.

They spent heavily on safeties, and could use both Thompson and PJ Locke as slot corners. There’s still a hole in the middle, but if they can patch that, Parker will be in position to get this group turned around relatively quickly.

Christian Parker, Future Head Coach

If that happens, says Jon Machota of The Athletic, the Cowboys could find themselves quickly in a bind: Parker’s career will take off quickly, and he could leap off to a head-coaching gig.

Speaking on “The One-Star Podcast,” Machota predicted that a good Cowboys turnaround will lead to a quick ascension up the ranks for Parker.

“If Christian Parker did that for the Cleveland Browns defense, it would be a big deal. But to do it for the Dallas Cowboys, there’s no questioning it,” Machota said. “If Christian Parker turns around the Dallas Cowboys defense, I am going to tell you exactly what’s happening to Christian Parker—he’s getting a head coaching job.

“I am talking a massive—I don’t think it will be a one-year turnaround. I don’t think he will get the personnel in one offseason that he needs for it. For me, I am saying, these next two years. If he turns this Cowboys defense around and they’re like, Top 10? He’s getting a head-coaching job.”
