New York Mets Linked to Potential Trade for All-Star Starter

The New York Mets are having a decent start to the 2026 season. The Mets currently have a 3-2 record and are third in the National League East standings. However, they also lost their most recent game to the St. Louis Cardinals by a 3-0 score, so they will be looking to bounce back against them in their next contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Overall, there is certainly reason to be optimistic about the Mets this season. They added several new players during the offseason, as they brought in players like Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta Jr, Luis Robert Jr, Marcus Semien, Devin Williams, and Jorge Polanco. However, when looking at their current group, they should not be afraid to make more additions during the season to help their chances of being true contenders.

One of the Mets’ biggest needs is another star in their rotation. Because of this, they are now being viewed as a potential trade fit for one of the best pitchers who is in the rumor mill at this stage of the season.

New York Mets Named Trade Fit for Minnesota Twins Star Pitcher Joe Ryan

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer took a look at the top 10 MLB trade candidates for the 2026 season. Among the players listed was Minnesota Twins star pitcher Joe Ryan, and it makes sense when noting that he has been the subject of trade speculation since the offseason.

“Like Isaac Paredes, Joe Ryan is not a free agent until after 2027, no matter what happens with that option. He, therefore, would not be a rental for prospective buyers. That’s one of his main appeals, with the other being that he’s a really, really good pitcher. Even if he ‘only’ has a 111 ERA+ to show for the last four seasons, that came with a 4.8 strikeout-to-walk ratio,” Rymer wrote.

Rymer also named a few potential landing spots for Ryan this season. Among the teams listed was the Mets, and it is understandable. There is no question that the Mets are in need of another star pitcher in the front half of their rotation, and acquiring Ryan would provide them with just that.

Ryan is coming off an All-Star campaign with the Twins, as he had a 13-10 record, a 3.42 ERA, and 194 strikeouts. He also had a strong first appearance of the 2026 season with the Twins, as he gave up zero runs and struck out seven batters. With numbers like these, he would be a major pickup for a Mets club that is looking to do some damage in 2026.

Mets Won’t Be the Only Team Linked to Twins’ Joe Ryan This Season

With Ryan being right in his prime at 29 years old and being under team control, there is no question that he should generate a ton of interest from contenders this season. Because of this, the Mets should not be the only team that ends up being connected to Ryan this campaign.

Ryan is exactly the kind of pitcher that playoff teams should be looking to add. Yet, the Mets undoubtedly stand out as a prime fit, and it will be intriguing to see if they can swing a deal for him from here.
