NFL Announces Punishment for 49ers Player in Loss to Rams

The San Francisco 49ers‘ defense had a challenging Week 10 after conceding 42 points in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams. On November 15, the NFL announced its fines for the previous week, and Tatum Bethune appeared on the list twice.

When a player receives a fine, they are notified of the infraction and can choose to appeal. Appeals are reviewed by a panel that features officers along with former NFL players Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson, all appointed and compensated by both the NFL and NFLPA. Their decisions are final and cannot be contested.

As for Bethune, his first fine, received from the league, was due to an unnecessary roughness play in the second quarter at the 2:00 minute mark, for using the helmet. Due to this play, the NFL is fining him $5,446.

On the other hand, the fine that the 49ers linebacker received was due to another play that the NFL deemed as unnecessary roughness. Bethune didn’t use his helmet in this incident, but it was due to a late hit. As a result, the league fined him $5,447.

49ers Will Look to Bounce Back With Brock Purdy

Bethune will need to put his two fines from the league behind him as the 49ers need to record a bounce-back performance in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals. Nonetheless, all eyes won’t be on the defensive unit, as they will be on the quarterback situation, with Brock Purdy returning as the starter.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told KNBR on November 13 that Brock Purdy will start this weekend. Purdy has been sidelined since Week 4 with a turf toe injury, during which Josh Jones filled in as the 49ers’ quarterback.

With Purdy back, the focus shifts to him staying healthy and putting any quarterback debate to rest. Shanahan also revealed how Jones reacted when he learned Purdy was ready to return as the starter.

“Honestly, it was awesome,” Shanahan said (h/t 49ers Web Zone). “I mean, I didn’t even have to communicate with him. I think he understood the situation that he went into. He’s understood it the whole time.

“And he had a real good idea that Brock was getting there, was going to be ready this week, so it wasn’t something that I really had to have a big meeting with or anything—but I did before we went out on the practice field. I did call him in just to tell him how much I appreciated how well he played during that time, and to kind of thank him for it.”

49ers QB Mac Jones Understands His Backup Role

While every NFL player brings a competitive drive to earn a starting spot, players like Jones recognize the expectations tied to their contracts and their role on the team. Circumstances may shift as the season progresses, but Purdy’s benching wasn’t a result of poor performance. Knowing this decision was coming, Jones accepted it without carrying any resentment.

“He’s like, ‘Hey, man, I enjoyed it, and I’m gonna go have fun on scout team today, and I’ll be ready if I’m ever needed again,’” Shanahan added. “Mac’s handled it great since the beginning. Him and Brock have been studs in the room together. They help each other a ton. They enjoy each other. And I’m really pumped to have him this year, and I’m really pumped that we have him next year also.
