NFL Fans Divided as 2025 No. 1 Overall Pick has Little Discussion Around Him

After a three-win season, the Tennessee Titans knew they had to change course. Cam Ward was the obvious choice to go No. 1 overall, but sometimes the obvious choice isn’t the best one.

With someone like Shedeur Sanders falling to No. 144, NFL fans remain curious as to which quarterback will be the best. Sanders has direct competition with Dillon Gabriel, though other names such as Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough emerge as potential candidates.

NFL Fans Chime in on the Lack of Discussion Around Cam Ward

Leading his “football analysis” account, a social media post was made claiming, “I can comfortably say Cam Ward is the least discussed number one overall pick (that’s a quarterback) heading into their rookie year in the past 20 years.”

Ward’s talent was undeniable in his final year of college. The fifth-year player transferred to Miami where he threw for 4,313 yards. His 39 touchdown to 7 interception ratio trumped the 25:7 he put up in his prior season at Washington State.

Ignoring his 2020 season, Ward threw for 15,927 yards from 2021-24. That comes out to 3,981 yards per season, as he had 134 passing touchdowns in that span. Ward added 18 rushing touchdowns, putting his total to 152 in a four-year window.

The numbers are there, but the talk has not been. A Green Bay Packers insider commented, There wasn’t a lot of Baker talk either, which seems even funnier in retrospect given that class.” Mayfield was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2018 draft that featured Sam Darnold selected in the first round ahead of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

“I think people just realize the Titans stink and aren’t putting too much on him,” this broadcaster said. Last year’s season with Will Levis was beyond a disaster, as it seems impossible for the Titans to get any worse than that.

Comments Continue to Roll in

Many others had something to say on the post, as one mentioned, “He’d be QB6 if in last years class.” That comment had fans divided as well, which caused a completely separate conversation.

Regardless, this fan compared him to, “The Paolo of the NFL.” Now, Paolo Banchero just signed a five-year, $239 million extension to remain with the Orlando Magic. Knowing how NFL contracts have been in recent seasons, a stellar rookie performance from Ward could land him something similar.

This individual broke down a few reasons for the miniscule hype around Ward, “1) It’s the Titans. 2) The very next pick after him is a guy who was doing things we haven’t seen since man walked on the moon. 3) Would’ve been QB6 in 2024 on draft boards. 4) Super low key guy.”

In comparison to Travis Hunter, that fan has a point. The Titans would have loved to take the chance on a two-for-one player, but their need for a quarterback was far superior. With Hunter’s dominance and Sanders’ fall in the draft, Ward was only given a slight bit of attention.

He’ll enter the 2025 season with a chip on his shoulder and a lot to prove. The Titans know he likely isn’t going to put up rookie numbers similar to Jayden Daniels last season. Even though Tennessee finds themselves in a weak division, it’s going to be tough for them to compete with the state of their team. Ward is a step in the right direction, and a clear building block to the future.
