NFL Insider Issues Surprising Update on Mike McDaniel’s Future with Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been a complete mess six games into the 2025 NFL campaign, and all eyes are on head coach Mike McDaniel. This was expected to be an important season for McDaniel and the Dolphins, as the team wanted to see him prove he could help them return to the playoffs after a down year in 2024. Instead, the team finds a way to hit a new low seemingly every week.

Injuries certainly haven’t helped, but McDaniel has seemingly had no answers when it comes to getting his squad back on track. As a result, it feels like only a matter of time until McDaniel gets fired, but according to a recent report, it sounds like Miami doesn’t have any plans of moving on from its head coach anytime soon.

Dolphins Not Looking to Fire Mike McDaniel Just Yet

After McDaniel was hired to be the Dolphins’ head coach in 2022, he quickly took the league by storm, turning their offense into one of the most efficient units in the league. The luster began to wear off in 2024, though, and things have completely fallen apart early in the 2025 campaign, making McDaniel’s firing feel inevitable.

Simply put, Miami has virtually nothing going for it on either side of the ball. The team’s defense is wildly shorthanded, particularly in the secondary. Losing two of the team’s starting cornerbacks, Artie Burns and Kader Kohou, before the start of the season certainly didn’t help matters, but McDaniel has had no answers here. The same can be said for the offense, which has been even worse in the wake of Tyreek Hill’s season-ending injury in Week 4.

McDaniel’s calling card was his playcalling ability, but that hasn’t been able to dig him out of the hole he is now in with the Dolphins. Add in his inability to take command of a locker room that is clearly not on the same page, and it’s resulted in a disaster of a situation. And even with all that being said, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported that the team has no plans to fire McDaniel anytime soon.

“Despite the fact that they’re 1-5, questions swirling around their leadership, it is my understanding that owner Stephen Ross is not looking to make a move anytime soon, which means the Dolphins are stuck with Mike McDaniel,” Schultz said on “The Schultz Report.”

Should the Dolphins Fire Mike McDaniel?

At this stage of the game, it seems very unlikely that McDaniel will be coaching the Dolphins in 2026. The question is simply when the team will move on from him. Owner Stephen Ross hasn’t shown any indication that he wants to fire McDaniel during the season, though, which means things could get a lot worse before they get better.

There may be a lack of available candidates to replace McDaniel, but it’s beginning to feel like the longer he stays in town, the worse things are going to get. There’s no doubt the team should fire McDaniel, and while it seems inevitable, it still has yet to happen. All the team can do for the time being is continue preparing for their Week 7 matchup with the Cleveland Browns, because it doesn’t seem like McDaniel is going anywhere anytime soon.
