NFL Punishes Ravens Player Ahead of Lions Matchup

The Detroit Lions had a fantastic win over ex-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears last weekend, but now, they had steep competition in the form of a game against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, September 22. It’s on Monday Night Football, so the NFL world will be watching to see how Dan Campbell and the Lions stand up to this test of the Ravens. While it’s brag-worthy that the Lions pulled off a 52-21 victory over the Bears, the Ravens are a different opponent, and they’ll likely be a much tougher to beat.

Looking back at last weekend’s matchup, no members of the Detroit Lions were slapped with NFL fines for actions during the Bears game. No Chicago Bears players were in trouble, either. But, one Baltimore Ravens player got slapped with a hefty punishment for their game.

Every week, the NFL slaps players with fines. “To protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures,” the NFL states. The league updates the roster every Saturday with offenses from the previous week.

“Players are notified of violations and may appeal any ruling,” the NFL adds on their website. “Cases are heard by appeals officers and former NFL players, Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL/NFLPA. The decisions made are final and binding.”

According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the league is fining Kyle Van Noy $17,389 for landing his “body weight” on Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco during the very the first play from scrimmage in Week 2. “The play in question was at the 14:56 mark of the first quarter, so first play from scrimmage,” he noted.

The NFL confirmed the news on Saturday, noting that the fine was for “a hit on the quarterback,” and the amount was confirmed to be $17,389.

Aside from this news, Van Noy was also ruled out for Monday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions following an injury he suffered against Cleveland. This season, he’s posted four total tackles and also leads Baltimore with 12.5 sacks in 2024. It’s be a hit to Baltimore to not have him on the field.

Game Predictions for Detroit Lions vs. Baltimore Ravens

It’s a new weekend of NFL football, and ESPN has released their game predictions for Week 3. Their piece, out on Friday, September 19, features “analytics writer Seth Walder makes a bold prediction for each matchup, and fantasy analyst Eric Moody shares fantasy football intel.”

For the Bears vs. Cowboys matchup, Walder makes the bold prediction that “Lions CB Terrion Arnold will allow at least 80 yards and a touchdown to WRs Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, combined. Arnold has allowed 3.2 yards per coverage snap as the nearest defender — highest in the league among outside corners with at least 50 coverage snaps — per NFL Next Gen Stats.”

Here’s to hoping the Lions pull off a very surprise victory, even though they won’t be at Ford Field.
