NFL Punishes Ravens Safety Alohi Gilman on Eve of Steelers Game

The Baltimore Ravens could be in for some hefty bonuses for making the playoffs if they can beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Week 18 regular season finale.

For one key member of the Ravens, it would help make up for some serious lost cash on the eve of a Winner-Take-All showdown for the NFC North Division title.

The NFL Game Day Accountability Committee dinged Ravens safety Alohi Gilman for a $17,389 fine for grabbing the face mask of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs in Baltimore’s 41-24 win in Week 17.

Gilman has been one of the big reasons why the Ravens’ defense has been so much better in the second half of the season. On October 7, Baltimore traded edge rusher and former first round pick Odafe Oweh and a 2026 seventh round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for Gilman and a 2026 fifth round pick.

Gilman has started all 16 games he’s played in this season for both teams and all 11 games for the Ravens since the trade. He has a combined 82 tackles, 8 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble and one (sort of) interception return for a touchdown.

In Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals, edge rusher Kyle Van Noy handed the ball backwards to Gilman after intercepting a pass by Joe Burrow deep in Ravens territory and Gilman raced 84 yards for a touchdown in a 24-0 win.

“Today’s Kyle Van Noy-Alohi Gilman play was the first lateral/handoff on an interception return resulting in a TD since Ed Reed to Dawan Landry in 2010,” NFL.com Senior Researcher Dante Koplowitz-Fleming wrote on X on December 14.

Gilman No Stranger to NFL Punishment

Gilman, a sixth round pick by the Chargers in the 2020 NFL draft, has bee in the NFL’s crosshairs before.

His fine following Week 17 is his first since joining the Ravens however he was fined twice during his time with the Chargers.

Don’t be surprised if Gilman ends up back with the Ravens in 2026. He’s an affordable option in the final year of a 2-year, $10.125 million contract he signed before the 2024 season and has a projected market value of a 2-year, $9.4 million contract, according to Spotrac.

Trade Re-Teamed Gilman With College Teammate

Another big reason Gilman might wind up spending a few more years in Baltimore is the familiarity Baltimore’s best defensive player has in him as he was college teammates with NFL All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton at Notre Dame.
Were it not for Gilman, Hamilton’s path to the Ravens may have never happened in the first place. Hamilton told Irish Illustrated’s Drew Mentock he was ready to transfer to back home to the University of Georgia before his freshman season even started.
It was Gilman, a senior, who talked Hamilton into staying at Notre Dame, where he was a 3-time All-American in 3 seasons and was selected by the Ravens in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2022 NFL draft.
“I was close to transferring,” Hamilton told Mentock. “I wanted to go home during fall camp, but (Gilman) talked me off the ledge.”
Hamilton signed a 4-year, $100 million contract extension with the Ravens before the season and is a 3-time NFL All-Pro in his first 4 seasons.
