The Edmonton Oilers made their first move of the 2025 offseason on Wednesday morning. Edmonton traded veteran winger Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fourth-round pick. The Oilers are still working the phones, though, and Viktor Arvidsson could be the next man out of town.
Arvidsson was one of two notable Edmonton signings in 2024 NHL Free Agency. It was widely expected that he and Jeff Skinner would help the Oilers in their quest for the Stanley Cup. However, both players were healthy scratches at various points in the postseason.
Skinner is re-entering NHL Free Agency on July 1. Arvidsson has another year left on his contract, though. And the Oilers are exploring the trade market.
An Arvidsson trade should happen soon. In fact, it could happen within the next couple weeks, according to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.
“The Oilers are looking to trade Viktor Arvidsson and his remaining $4 million cap hit for next season. Arvidsson has a full no-move clause, but that shouldn’t be an issue. He met with Oilers management after the season, and both sides agreed that a change could be beneficial for all involved. The agent and team are working together to find him a new home. The Oilers have had several inquiries already. I would expect a trade within the next two to three weeks,” LeBrun wrote on Thursday.
Why Oilers Are Looking to Clear Cap Space

Leila Devlin/Getty ImagesViktor Arvidsson did not live up to expectations after signing with the Edmonton Oilers last summer.
Edmonton is coming off its second straight Stanley Cup Final. And with this comes inherent salary cap constraints. In saying this, these constraints may be a bit loftier for Edmonton at this point. And they need to clear salary as a result.
The most pressing issue of the summer is defenseman Evan Bouchard. Bouchard is one of the best offensive defensemen in the game right now. Moreover, he has already emerged as one of the best offensive defensemen in postseason history. He is a restricted free agent this summer and is due for a large raise.
Edmonton is also working on an extension for forward Trent Frederic. Frederic came over from the Boston Bruins at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. He is expected to sign an eight-year contract once the cap situation is figured out.
The most important aspect, though, is Connor McDavid. The Oilers captain is signed through 2026, but after that, he is a free agent. Edmonton can sign him to a contract extension starting July 1, however.
What Viktor Arvidsson Offers Other Teams
Arvidsson missed time with an injury in 2023-24, limiting him to 15 games with the Los Angeles Kings. He did have better injury luck this year, as he played 67 games for the Oilers. Prior to the injuries, the veteran winger was a solid top-six goal scorer.
From 2016-17 to 2022-23, Arvidsson scored 165 goals and 331 points in 466 games split between the Kings and Nashville Predators. He helped Nashville make the Stanley Cup Final in 2017, in fact. And he was trusted to play nearly 18 minutes a game during this span.
Arvidsson may not get back to these heights, but he has this talent in him. Even if he doesn’t get back to this form, he is a solid secondary scorer who can play middle-six minutes. There is a team that can use him on their roster, and it will certainly be interesting to see where he lands.
