Patrick Mahomes’ Injury Status Just Changed Again

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs had a heartbreaking loss on Sunday, December 14, when the Chiefs fell to the Los Angeles Chargers, in a 16-13 final tally, and were taken out of postseason consideration. The worst part of game wasn’t the loss, though. The most brutal part was Mahomes suffering a season-ending knee injury in the final moments of the game.

On Monday, December 15, a scurry of news broke about Mahomes and his injury status. Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, head coach Andy Reid gave an update on Mahomes, saying that the quarterback was slated to get surgery but that he had the belief that Mahomes would rehab just fine.

“I’ve had a good visit with him a couple of different times,” Reid said, talking to reporters. “He’s in a good place. He always feels like he let people down, but then he comes back and he’s ready for the challenge ahead, which is what’s real right now. He’s just got to get through surgery, wherever it might be, and then move on from there.”

Reid also mentioned that Mahomes would be getting a second opinion before getting surgery. As Monday night wrapped up, another development surfaced for Mahomes, and it’s a good one.

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Takes the Next Step

On Monday night, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on X that Mahomes has officially had surgery. So, the second opinion must have been similar to the first in what he needed to have done.

“Per the Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes underwent surgery in Dallas this evening with Dr. Dan Cooper to repair the tear in his left ACL,” Schefter reported. “Mahomes will immediately begin his rehab process.”

For him to say that Mahomes is “immediately” starting his rehab process means that the surgery went well, so that’s good news for the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, his status has changed, already, to the rehabilitation process.

“I know the process of rehabbing for sure,” Reid said during his press conference earlier in the day. “He’ll get in there, and I know he’ll come out on the strong end of this thing.”

Reid added that he’s met with Mahomes a “couple of different times” since the injury.

“He’s in a good place. He always feels like he let people down, but then he comes back and he’s ready for the challenge ahead, which is what’s real right now,” Reid added. “He’s just got to get through surgery, wherever it might be, and then move on from there.”

Kansas City Chiefs Will Still Play Hard

Even though the postseason isn’t happening for the Chiefs, Reid insists they’ll still play hard. They’re playing for pride, after all.

“As we go here, we’re finding a lot out about some of the young guys are having opportunities to play,” Reid said. “We’re going to finish this season strong and with effort, and then you get into the offseason. But I’m always optimistic about going forward.”

So, Mahomes, who joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, will have the entire offseason to rehab. For the Kansas City Chiefs, hopefully he comes back better and stronger than ever.
