Philly’s Jalen Hurts Pitches a Perfect Game as Eagles Leave Vikings Seeing Red

The Eagles faced an old friend today in Carson Wentz, who was playing for his fifth team since being exiled from Philadelphia back in 2020.  In the first half Wentz reminded his old team why they bailed on him after only five seasons.  The second half Jalen Hurts reminded his current team why they drafted him as Wentz’s replacement back in 2020.

A Perfect Day

The Eagles prevailed over the Minnesota Vikings today, in the same stadium where they won their first Super Bowl back in February of 2018.  They did it slow and methodically, at times most likely perplexing the lay viewer how this game stayed so close most of the way.  But in typical Birds fashion they won today’s game the same way they’ve won the other four of previous six games thus far this season, by making big-time plays at big-time moments.  Timely sacks, catches, throws and play calls were the theme of this one, headlined by only the third perfect QB rating in Eagles history posted by Jalen Hurts.   For all of the cirticism this team has received for their anemic offense lately, and rightfully so, the aerial attack exploded today.  Check out these numbers:

  • Jalen Hurts 19/23, 326 yards, 3 Tds, 14.2 avg, 0 INT Rat 158.3
  • A.J. Brown & Devonta Smith: 13 recs, 304 yds, 3 TDs

The game began uneventfully enough until, on the Vikings third possession, Ginger Jesus was staring down a charging and unabated Jalen Carter, he panicked and threw an easy pick-6 to to Birds linebacker Jalix Hunt, who returned it 42 yards for an Eagles score to give Philly a 14-3 lead.

On Minnesota’s next possession Wentz rolled to his right deep in his own territory and threw a pop fly to no one in particular, where Birds’ safety Andrew Mukuba was waiting for it at the Birds’s 44 yard line. Unfortunately for Philly, the Birds went three and out afterwards.  It was that kind of first half for the Eagles offense for the most part.

The Birds did score on their very first possession of the game, a 37 yard pass from Hurts to A.J.Brown to open the scoring but only netted 8 yards of offense until their final drive of the first half that resulted in halftime.

Hurts Delivered the Bomb

Minnesota tacked on a field goal to open the second half scoring but two plays later Hurts found Devonta Smith with a 79 yard missile to give the Eagles a 21-9 lead.

Remarkably, as bad as Wentz was at times in the first half, the Vikings kept hanging around and cut the score to 21-16 late in the third quarter on a one yard run by Jordan Mason.

The Birds responded with a nine play, 47 yard drive that resulted in a stunning missed 42 yard field goal attempt by Jake Elliott, his first miss of the year.

Birds’ Defense Responds

The Vikings looked like they captured momentum and took the ball right down the field but a huge sack by Moro Ojomo kept Minnesota in check and forced them to settle for Will Reichard’s fourth field goal of the day, a 35 yarder to cut the Eagles lead to just two, 21-19 with 10:06 left in regulation.

But Hurts and the Eagles offense responded on their ensuing drive logging the play of the game, as the Super Bowl MVP completed a huge 3rd and 13 pass to Brown to move the chains at the Birds own 40 yard line to keep the drive alive.  A few plays later Hurts would find Brown again down the seam for a 26 yard TD pass to give the Birds back their cushion, 28-19 with 6:35 left.

The Vikings wouldn’t go away however as Wentz used his legs and some moxi to move the ball 61 yards on 16 plays that resulted in a Reichard 29 yard filed goal, only after a T.J. Hockenson called touchdown was reversed upon further review.  That cut the Birds lead back down to six, 28-22.  The Vikings made six trips into the red zone but only came away with one touchdown on the day.

What Does Brown Do For You?

The “other” play of the game came with the Eagles trying to run out the last two minutes of game clock.  they faced a 3rd and 9 with 1:45 left and the Vikings still holding onto two timeouts.  Former Eagle cornerback Isaiah Rodgers was lined up on Brown in man coverage on the left side and Hurts identified it immediately.  Rodgers anticipated a slant and Brown blew right by him on a stop and go route.  Hurts lofted one with plenty of air under it for Brown to provide a soft landing spot 45 yards later, and for all intents and purposes, that was the ball game.  The Eagles ran out the clock from there and got out of Minnesota with a gutty 28-22 victory.  Philadelphia moves to 5-2 on the season and are home next weekend to play the New York Giants.
