The Las Vegas Raiders‘ defense needs to be on alert after Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had his best game of the 2025 season so far in the Week 3 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Williams completed 19 of 28 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns, putting the Silver and Black’s defense on notice to play better than they did against the Washington Commanders.
Nonetheless, the Raiders have to worry that Williams is finding his comfort zone in the new offense after struggling in his first two games under first-year head coach Ben Johnson.
Heading into the Week 4 clash, former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner believes that Williams is making progress as he looks to build off his performance against the Cowboys.
“I thought Caleb played arguably his best game as a pro,” Warner said on September 22 during an appearance on 670 The Score. “And I watched the one in London a year ago, where he threw four touchdown passes. But the way he played this game, I thought you could argue was his best game as a pro, and he’s getting better, and he’s fighting the urge to play fast and to play out of structure.
“And it seems to be becoming easier for him. Still, he had a number of plays in this where he was playing too fast, that he’s got to slow down, whether it’s his feet, whether it’s his mind.
“But I’ve seen it all year long, he’s fighting that, and he’s trying to learn, and he’s trying to get comfortable playing on schedule and in the pocket. And every week, he seems to be a little bit more comfortable, which has to excite everybody with the Bears.”
What Should the Raiders Defense Be Worried About
Las Vegas’ defense have had issues this season with mobile quarterbacks and they get another one in Williams. But the USC product isn’t the only concern for the Raiders. Warner pointed out elements of the Bears’ offense that defensive coordinator Patrick Graham needs to watch closely.
“I just think the whole operation offensively was fun to watch,” Warner added. “I think the key for me was they won early—they won within the scheme of what Ben was trying to do. And then we got to see Ben come out. We got to see the flea flicker. We got to see some of the fun stuff that’s always been a part of what Ben Johnson is as an offensive coordinator.
“And we haven’t really seen that a lot yet this year because they’ve been behind, and they’ve been trying to play the game. They played the game well early, which opened up the opportunity for some of those fun aspects. And then they had success with those fun aspects as well. So I just think it was a really good overall performance by the Bears in general.”
Bears Believe Raiders Are the Favorite
Despite the praise and confidence Warner sees in the Bears’ offense, Johnson thinks his team will head to Las Vegas as the underdog.
“We’re looking to piggyback on that performance here and go for our first road win here this week,” Johnson told reporters on September 22 (h/t Ari Meirov). “We’re road underdogs already. I think Vegas has picked to beat us. We got to come out and have another great week of preparation, and I’ll go ahead and open it up.”
