Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he’s held talks with Bayern Munich over becoming their next manager.

Thomas Tuchel, who has been linked with replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, will step aside at the end of the season.

Bayern had hoped to appoint Xabi Alonso, who has just ended Bayern’s 11-year winning run of Bundesliga titles with Bayer Leverkusen.

But the Spaniard has opted to stay with the newly-crowned German champions and options are thin on the ground.

Rangnick was appointed Austria’s manager following his seven-month stint at Old Trafford.

The German once revolutionised the Bundesliga with spells at Ulm, Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and most famously Schalke.

And Rangnick has confirmed that Bayern have been in touch, though he says they most confirm they want to appoint him if he’s to seriously consider a move.

‘There has been contact from the side of Bayern Munich and I have informed the Austrian Football Association,’ Rangnick told 90minuten.at., external

Asked when he would need to consider that interest seriously, Rangnick said: “If Bayern say: ‘We want you.’

‘And then I would also have to ask myself: ‘Do I really want this?’

‘If I want to do something else I will first discuss it with the Austrian FA.’

Vastly respected in Germany, Rangnick’s reputation took a hit during his time at Old Trafford as he struggled to turn the club around following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

Rangnick had been keen to take the job permanently, but results were poor and the German told the club they needed ‘open heart surgery’ to cure their problems.
