Rams Lack Of Rookie Usage Named Big Surprise

The Los Angeles Rams have four tight ends on the 53-man roster, but three of those players have been receiving quality targets in the 2025 season.

Tyler Higbee, the longest tenured tight end in the group, currently leads the position in receiving yards (37), while Davis Allen leads in receiving touchdowns (2). Colby Parkinson has two receptions on the season with the Rams, but currently has -6 yards.

The Rams selected tight end Terrance Ferguson out of Oregon with their first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, yet he has only played four snaps on offense this season. Ferguson didn’t play a single offensive snap in the season opener and was inactive in the Week 3 matchup against the defending Super Bowl champs.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon names Los Angeles’ lack of use of Ferguson as a surprise after Week 3.

“If you fancy yourself a contender and you use a second-round pick on a tight end, one would think you’d be prepared to use him fairly quickly. Instead, Ferguson played just four offensive snaps in the first two weeks of the season before being a healthy scratch in Week 3. I get wanting to give a guy time, and that there are several veteran tight ends on the roster, but you’d think they’d have thrown more at Ferguson by now,” Gagnon wrote.

The former Oregon Duck was dealing with a groin injury during training camp that forced the rookie tight end to miss the first two games of the preseason.

Ferguson was able to haul in two catches for 48 yards in the preseason finale for the Los Angeles Rams, showing improvement on his injured groin, but he has not been used as an offensive weapon in the Rams’ offense in the regular season.

Rams’ head coach spoke about the lack of use of the rookie tight end on his ‘Coach McVay Show’ after the Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I think we’ve got tremendous depth at the tight end position. Got a guy in Tyler Higbee who’s been doing it at a high clip for a long time. Colby Parkinson, I think, has taken tremendous steps, as has Davis Allen. And you really look at it, he did miss some critical time throughout training camp with the groin injury,” head coach McVay said.

“He is a guy who is going to be a big-time player for us. I have zero doubt. My confidence in him, from when we drafted him, to where we are now, is even better.”

Fighting For Snaps

Terrance Ferguson is the youngest player in the Los Angeles Rams’ tight end room and has the least experience.

Tyler Higbee can be considered a legend for the franchise, having the most yards for a TE. Colby Parkinson is entering his second year, and Davis Allen is entering his third year in McVay’s offensive scheme. Ferguson, the rookie, will have to catch up with the rest to be able to compete for offensive snaps this season.

Parkinson suffered an injury in the season opener against the Houston Texans, which forced him to miss Week 2, allowing Ferguson to receive an opportunity on offense. Parkinson returned in Week 3 and forced Ferguson to be a healthy scratch.

The rookie tight end will need to make the most of his time at practice to get more gameday snaps and help cement his role in the Los Angeles Rams offense.
