Rams Make Critical Roster Decision on Super Bowl Champion

Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams could get a big boost ahead of the playoffs, with the team announcing good news on tight end Tyler Higbee.

Higbee’s potential return is good news for quarterback Matthew Stafford, in particular.

LA is coming off its first back-to-back losses of the 2025 season. Moreover, while offense has not been the Rams’ only issue while Higbee has been sidelined, it has not clicked as it did earlier in the season.

The Rams announced their “Roster Moves” in a post on X on December 31, though the only one listed was that they “Designated for Return, Returned to Practice TE Tyler Higbee.”

Higbee has not played since Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. The announcement of his potential return drew plenty of attention. Higbee, who turns 33 on New Year’s Day, has caught 20 passes for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns this season.

The Rams have until January 21 to activate Higbee from IR.

If they do not, he will revert to the injured list and remain out for the rest of the season, which the Rams hope ends in a Super Bowl berth.

RAMS ON FILM posted on X in November that “Higbee has carved out a solid career being a very willing blocker & stepping up as a pass catcher when called upon. His [137] games played ranks 5th All Time in Rams history, for strictly offensive ‘Skill Players’. A leader!”

Despite Higbee’s career evolution, his future, particularly with the Rams, remains uncertain.

Higbee getting back on the field before the end of the campaign is as important for him as it could turn out to be for the Rams. Higbee is in the final year of a two-year, $17 million contract.

He is not only the Rams’ most experienced tight end, but he is also one of the remaining holdovers from their last Super Bowl (2021). The Rams have leaned on veterans Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen and rookie Terrance Ferguson in Higbee’s absence.

The Rams Wire’s Cameron DaSilva noted how well the healthy trio has played without Higbee.

“It remains to be seen where Higbee will fit into the rotation,” DaSilva wrote on December 31. “But more depth is never a bad thing.”

Tyler Higbee Needs Strong Finish to Season

Even if Higbee’s future is not with the Rams, he can add to his tape for the season ahead of free agency, where his age and recent injury history could work against him. Higbee played in three games for the Rams last season.

Ferguson was the Rams’ first pick of the 2025 draft.

He, Allen, and Parkinson are all under contract for next season, too. The writing appears to be on the wall for Higbee, who has the third-best catch rate among the group, but can still help the Rams for the remainder of his tenure.

Over The Cap projects the Rams will have $80 million in cap space for 2026. Still, the Rams could always use the cap space they would save by letting Higbee walk elsewhere.

That decision will come after the season for Higbee and the Rams, though.
