Rams Named Dream Destination For Recently Benched QB

The Indianapolis Colts have announced that Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback for the organization in week 1 of the 2025-26 season, beating out Anthony Richardson.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said he doesn’t want to have a “short leash” with Jones at QB, leaving Richardson with a low chance to get a start next season.

With Richardson on the bench, it leaves questions about what’s next for the former 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The former Florida Gator is only 23 years old and has the opportunity to revitalize his career elsewhere or sit on the bench, hoping for an opportunity in Indy.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox created a list of which teams would benefit Richardson the most to help with his career, naming the Los Angeles Rams as an option.

Anthony Richardson To Los Angeles?

Knox believes Anthony Richardson adding to the Los Angeles quarterback room would be great for the Rams as a future long-term option, with Knox calling the QB a “possible succession plan.”

“While Richardson could benefit from gaining in-game experience, he could learn a lot by sitting behind an experienced veteran and/or learning from one of the NFL’s top offensive coaches,” Knox wrote.

“Richardson could also win by landing in Los Angeles, where he would gain guidance from McVay and tutelage from Matthew Stafford. If/when he got on the field, he’d get to work with terrific pass-catchers in Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, too.”

Stafford, 37, can still play at the highest level in the later stages of his career, but the Rams have to think of the future when Stafford retires.

“L.A. doesn’t have a future franchise quarterback on its roster—and that roster is too good to “earn” a pick near the top of the 2026 draft,” Knox added.

Knox credits the Rams for helping Baker Mayfield have a career resurgence after he was a backup to Stafford in the 2022 season.

Acquiring Anthony Richardson

Anthony Richardson is entering the third year of his rookie contract and is set to have a cap hit of $9.27 million this season, according to Over the Cap. The Rams have the salary to acquire Richardson, with around $22 million in cap space, and could eat the rest of Richardson’s rookie contract.

The question looms on whether the Colts will trade Richardson.

Even though Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback, the Colts could be hesitant to move on from Richardson. If Jones doesn’t perform as intended, Richardson can replace the former Duke quarterback, as he knows the offensive scheme.

The Rams adding a former first-round pick would be a bit costly. Knox didn’t mention what it would take for teams to acquire Richardson, but it could most likely require a Day 2 draft pick at most.

Learning from McVay and Stafford, playing for a winning team, the Rams seem like a good option for Richardson to continue his career.
