Matthew Stafford has been one of the better, if not the best, quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL season so far.
The Los Angeles Rams QB leads the league in passing yards and has the second-most in passing touchdowns. Stafford has put himself in the MVP discussion after five weeks and could be a serious contender if he continues to perform.
Stafford is in his fifth year as a member of the Rams and has helped the team win a Super Bowl in the 2021-22 season, showing that he has been a vital piece of the team.
The quarterback is 37 years old and is in the latter end of his career. Stafford has been dealing with back issues during training camp, leaving many wondering if his injury would be a concern this season.
Though the wheels haven’t fallen off, the Rams will need to prepare for the future without Matthew Stafford behind the center.
Mock Draft Sees Rams Select Ty Simpson

Matthew Stafford signed an extension with the LA Rams, keeping the quarterback and his talent for another two years.
CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson released a mock draft that has the Rams selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson to prepare for the era after Stafford. In his mock draft, the Rams will select the quarterback with the 24th overall pick.
“Ty Simpson is a big-armed pocket passer who plays with composure and outstanding mental processing both before and after the snap. He plays with an aggressive confidence and excels at navigating muddy pockets, throwing accurately to all three levels and ripping tight-window throws with anticipation. Simpson is athletic enough to buy time with his legs to extend plays and move the sticks,” Wilson wrote.
Simpson is in his first season as the starter for the Crimson Tide, throwing 1,478 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The quarterback will sit behind Stafford and learn from the Super Bowl winner before getting an opportunity to show that he can become the next franchise player for the organization.
Rams Have Two First-Round Picks In Mock Draft

The LA Rams didn’t make a selection in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft after trading out with the Atlanta Falcons. In that trade, the Rams will have a second first-round pick in next year’s draft.
Wilson predicts the Rams will select LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane with the 11th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
“A savvy, instinctive CB who excels in both off-coverage and press-man schemes, Mansoor Delane is consistently in the WR’s back pocket on intermediate and vertical routes. He has a good understanding of route combinations, will drive on balls in front of him and is a reliable tackler in space,” Wilson wrote.
The Rams currently do not have a solid CB1 on the roster and selecting the highly touted corner can give the team the shutdown corner they need next season.
Wilson ranks Delane as the third-best cornerback in the 2026 draft class.
