Rasmus Hojlund is pushing for a permanent transfer with Napoli holding talks to sign the Manchester United striker, according to reports in Italy.

Antonio Conte’s side have joined the race to sign Hojlund as Romelu Lukaku now faces several weeks on the sidelines due to a thigh injury.

Sky Sport Italy reports that Napoli have made an approach to United over a deal for the Denmark international.

The report adds that Hojlund’s preference is to return to Serie A on a permanent basis rather than join a club on loan with an option to buy.

AC Milan had held extensive talks to sign Hojlund from United this summer but the Serie A side are now on the verge of reaching an agreement to sign Victor Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, which includes an option to buy for €30 million (£25.9m).

United’s decision to sign Benjamin Sesko in a £73.7m deal from RB Leipzig could signal the end of Hojlund’s time at Old Trafford.

Hojlund, who was signed in a £72m deal from Atalanta two years ago, was left out of United’s squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal last Sunday.

Speaking about his decision to omit Hojlund from his squad for the 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, Amorim said: ‘It is a fight for places.

Hojlund, meanwhile, has publicly maintained that he wants to remain at United in order to compete for his place alongside Sesko.

‘I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. I’m still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I’m only 22,’ Hojlund said during United’s pre-season campaign earlier this month.

‘Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22. But I’ve learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I’m starting to develop and become even better in the basics.

‘Now it’s just about for me to sharpen myself and I’ve done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that.

‘Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I’m more than ready. I’m feeling sharp, so I’m welcoming everything that comes. I think it’s good with competition and it only sharpens the team.’
