Red Wings Monday Night Loss Ends in Mayhem

The New Jersey Devils pulled out a gutsy 4-3 win on Monday against the Detroit Red Wings at the Prudential Center. Connor Brown capitalized on a costly gaffe by Detroit defenseman Travis Hamonic. Brown notched his sixth of the season to get the game-winner.

But as the clock ticked down the final seconds in the third period, things got agitated. The Red Wings made one last push to tie the game. Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom made several timely saves to stymie the Wings’ efforts.

As the final horn sounded, things got completely out of hand. Here’s a look at the mad ending, as shown by B/R Open Ice:

The wild ending showcased the growing feud between these two Eastern Conference rivals. The Devils picked up two crucial points in the standings. New Jersey is now one point behind the Carolina Hurricanes for top spot in the Metro Division. Meanwhile, the Red Wings were left with a bitter pill to swallow on Monday night.

Devils Snap Three-Game Skid Thanks to Markstrom’s Brilliant Outing

With Monday night’s win, the New Jersey Devils snapped a three-game losing skid. The win largely over the Red Wings came on the heels of Jacob Markstrom’s fantastic performance. He stopped 32 of 35 shots as the Wings had a decisive 35-19 edge in the shot count.

But the Devils had the edge where it mattered most. Timo Meier, Nico Hischier, Cody Glass, and Connor Brown got the tallies to push the Devils to a 14-7-1 mark. Most importantly, the Devils are riding their home point streak to nine games.

The Devils remain undefeated at home in regulation. They have an 8-0-1 record, but a paltry 6-7-0 mark on the road. The Devils are a pedestrian 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. However, they’ve managed to remain atop the Metro Division standings largely due to their consistent play throughout the season.

Red Wings Continue to Slide

The Red Wings, meanwhile, continue to slide. The club has run into a tough stretch in its last half-dozen games. While the Wings pulled out solid wins over the New York Rangers and Seattle Kraken, they lost a disappointing game against the New York Islanders last Thursday.

The 5-0 blanking in Long Island underscored the Red Wings’ inconsistent play over their last 10 games. Detroit is now 4-5-1 in its last 10 games. While they remain one point off the lead in the Atlantic Division, things aren’t getting any easier.

The Red Wings are slated to play back-to-back games this weekend. They’ll take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at home on Friday night, then head down to Boston to meet the Bruins at the TD Garden on Saturday night.

After that, the Wings will be back at home to face the Bruins on December 2. Those three games could decide whether the Red Wings continue to make headway or remain stuck in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit has not made the playoffs in nine seasons. So, this year is a particularly important one, as the Wings look to avoid missing the playoffs for a full decade.
