Rising Broncos Assistant Coach Could ‘Level Up’ With Another Team

While the Denver Broncos have Joe Lombardi listed as offensive coordinator, anyone who has spent time watching the team play knows that’s a “name only” title.

One person — head coach Sean Payton — controls the offense for the Broncos.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t take input, however, and one name on his coaching staff that’s popped up recently as having a particular role that could lead to bigger things is quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb.

The Athletic’s Diana Russini put Webb on a list of NFL position coaches who could be “Leveling Up’ to become coordinators in 2026.

“Several young coaches around the league are generating real momentum as potential candidates for larger roles,” Russini wrote on Saturday, January 3. “Multiple head coaches and assistants have shared strong reviews and belief in a group that includes Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb and secondary coach Jim Leonhard, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik and Patriots passing game coordinator Thomas Brown.”

Webb’s Path to Becoming High Level NFL Assistant

Webb has an interesting history with 2 of the NFL’s highest profile players in Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and 2-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and 2-time Pro Bowler Baker Mayfield.

In college, Webb went back and forth as the starting quarterback with Mayfield during his freshman year before Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma.

After 2 years as the starter, Webb found himself replaced by Mahomes, with Webb transferring to Cal for his final college season.

In his one season at Cal, Webb threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and was selected in the third round (No. 82 overall) of the 2017 NFL draft.

Webb spent 7 seasons as a backup quarterback for the Giants, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills before Payton hired him as the Broncos quarterbacks coach in 2023 and he added the title of pass game coordinator in 2025.

Webb Might Make Even Bigger Leap

While the move up to offensive coordinator seems like the most likely next step for Webb, there’s a chance a team could take a flier on him as a head coach.

If that were to happen, he would miss becoming the NFL’s youngest head coach by just weeks. Davis will turn 31 years old on January 22, which means Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay would still hold the record at 30 years and 11 months old when he was hired in 2017.

“I’ve gotten the sense that teams searching for a HC this offseason could look to interview more outside-the-box candidates, with no clear hot name like Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, or Liam Coen out there,” NFL Insider Jordan Schultz said on December 23. “One name I’m watching: Broncos QBs coach Davis Webb.”

“Look for former Giants QB and Denver QB coach Davis Webb being on Joe Schoen’s radar,” The Giants Insider Podcast wrote on X. “Nothing but rave reviews coming out of Denver on Webb. Giants thought very highly of him in his time here.”

The most likely scenario for Webb? Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is hired as a head coach for one of the openings and takes Webb with him and gives him full control over the offense.
