Ruben Amorin urged to sign former Man Utd and Arsenal star: ‘He’s doing brilliant things’

Ruben Amorim has been urged to bring Danny Welbeck back to Manchester United by another former Old Trafford star.

Amorim was appointed as United’s new manager on November 11 and oversaw a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town in his first game in charge.

Given his fairly unique philosophy, Amorim has admitted it will be a slow process to turn Manchester United around, with the Red Devils currently in the bottom-half of the Premier League.

The Portuguese ex-Sporting Lisbon boss is also expected to bring in some of his own signings, with his former player Viktor Gyokeres being heavily linked with a move to Manchester.

United have looked desperately short in attacking areas this season, scoring just 13 goals in 12 league games, and there are doubts over recent signings Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Ex-Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe believes his former club need to strengthen Amorim’s attacking options and says Welbeck would be a shrewd if unexpected signing.

Former England striker Welbeck made 142 appearances for boyhood club United across a six-year spell at the Theatre of Dreams.

He was sold to Arsenal in 2014 and, since 2020, has impressed for Brighton, scoring six goals and making two assists in 12 Premier League games this season.

‘Manchester United could look at someone like Danny Welbeck in January,’ Sharpe told Racing Tipster.

‘I know he’s been at the club before, but he’s doing brilliant things at Brighton this season and looks a really assured and mature player at the moment.

‘He’s working his socks off, creating and scoring goals, and he looks like he’s in his prime down there at the AMEX Stadium.

‘That’s the type of striker I’m thinking of that is bright enough and strong enough to have a really good effect in the Premier League.

‘I think Rasmus Hojlund will come good eventually, but he’s still a bit raw and still needs a little but more composure, so the club probably need a bit of extra backup.’

Sharpe, who won three Premier League titles at Manchester United, also revealed he has doubts over Gyokeres, who is being linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world.

The Sweden international has scored 24 goals in 20 games this season and 67 in 70 appearances overall since joining Sporting from Championship side Coventry City in the summer of 2023.

‘Viktor Gyokeres is having a really good season so far and I have no doubt Ruben Amorim would set up to get the best out of him, but he wouldn’t be my number one choice for the Premier League,’ Sharpe said.

‘It depends if the club want to go for an older and more experience person to lead the line, but someone like Liam Delap from Ipswich is a fantastic player and had another good game on Sunday.

‘He really gave Matthijs de Ligt a hard time and held onto the ball very well.’

Amorim opted to play Marcus Rashford up front in his first game in charge ahead of Hojlund and Zirkzee, with the England international breaking the deadlock inside two minutes.

Discussing Rashford’s role in the team, Sharpe said: ‘Marcus scored against Ipswich on Sunday, but I’d actually say he’s better on the wing than he is up front.

‘He’s more suited at facing up to people rather than playing with his back to goal, so I’d say he looks a lot stronger coming in from the left and cutting in on his right foot.

‘Rashford isn’t suited to holding the ball up and having to produce moments on his own.

‘He’d require a lot more coaching if he was to continue in the number nine position, so I think he’ll eventually go back over to the left once Amorim has found a good balance within the rest of the team.’
