The San Antonio Spurs will enter Victor Wembanyama’s third NBA season as the most intriguing team in the league. Not only is Wembanyama the most exciting player in the league, but the Spurs have recently surrounded him with talent like De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper.
Those two players’ biggest responsibility will simply be getting Wembanyama the ball in favorable spots. Harper, a rookie picked second overall, is an elite guard prospect. However, he is not the best offseason pickup the Spurs made.
In an effort to open a title window centered around Wembanyama right now, the Spurs signed Luke Kornet to a four-year deal. His job, unlike Fox’s and Harper’s, is to take the ball from Wembanyama.
So far, he has been excellent.

Luke Kornet Is Perfect for Victor Wembanyama
The Spurs’ sole goal should be–and is–maximizing Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs tried pairing him with a floor-spacing big man in Zach Collins, although that was an unideal fit.
In short, Wembanyama should be the floor-spacing big man who can confound teams on both ends of the floor. Kornet gives him a serviceable defensive anchor, allowing him to make riskier plays on defense. On offense, Kornet is a 7-foot-1 target down low for Wembanyama to pass the ball to.
“There was always a level of playing Victor with another bigger person,” explained head coach Mitch Johnson after the preseason opener. “Last year, we just didn’t have that as an option a lot of times. So Luke, we thought would be a good option for that.”
In the preseason game, Kornet finished with 16 points and four rebounds. He did not miss a shot, and half of his baskets came at the rim after an assist from Wembanyama.
Kornet Gives Ultimate Flexibility to San Antonio Spurs
In a few seasons, Harper should emerge as one of the three best players on the Spurs’ roster. For now, however, he is an unproven rookie with a thumb injury.
Fans have no idea how he fits next to Wembanyama. Of course, one can imagine that a pass-first slasher will do a pretty good job. He is a rookie, though, and nothing is guaranteed.
When Wembanyama has to sit, the Spurs have been abysmal in the past. Kornet is more than capable of playing a traditional center role off the bench. The two can and will share the court, and Wembanyama’s passing talents from the perimeter should set up easy buckets for Kornet.
If defenses don’t close out when Wembanyama gets the ball, he can loft shots from deep. When he misses, the Spurs will have a seven-footer already in position to gobble up offensive rebounds, although Wembanyama corraling his own miss is also a possibility.
Between Wembanyama, Kornet, Kelly Olynyk, and Bismack Biyombo, the Spurs have the best center rotation in the entire league.
