The Tartan Army must now wait for the final group games of the campaign to play out over the next four days to find out whether they will be heading home or not.
Shortly after the game, Clarke spoke to BBC Sport in a post-match interview, clearly still frustrated with the manner of the defeat.
‘We made it difficult for ourselves. That’s it,’ he said in response to the interviewer’s first question.

‘We gave them the goals and the game. Disappointing,’ he added.
Asked how he would look at what is to come as Scotland wait to learn their fate, Clarke had enough, responding: ‘I can’t even think about that. Sorry, I can’t even think about it,’ before walking away abruptly.

Clarke made it clear earlier in the competition he is not a fan of the immediate post-match interviews that take place on the pitch shortly after the full-time whistle.
Following the 1-0 defeat to Morocco, Clarke said ‘I don’t know why we do these’ in an interview that lasted 40 seconds.
