The Seattle Seahawks made several roster moves this offseason to revise the team’s offense. Sam Darnold replaces Geno Smith as the Seahawks QB1, but Seattle also has a revamped wide receiver room.
Aside from Jaxson Smith-Njigba, the Seahawks wide receiver group looks a lot different with DK Metcalf now catching passes from Aaron Rodgers for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two-time Super Bowl champ (from his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs) wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling was signed to potentially earn a starting spot alongside Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp.
The early preseason signs point to Valdes-Scantling now fighting for a roster spot. Here’s what you need to know about the Seahawks wide receiver battle.
Seahawks WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling Has Had a ‘Very Quiet Camp’: Insider
Part of the reason Valdes-Scantling’s future in the Pacific Northwest is uncertain is the emergence of Dareke Young and Tory Horton. The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar revealed that Valdes-Scantling has had a “very quiet camp.”
“Valdes-Scantling was signed to stretch the field as the No.3 receiver, but he’s had a very quiet camp, wasn’t targeted against the Chiefs and likely won’t play against the Green Bay Packers in the preseason finale,” Dugar wrote in an August 19, 2025, story titled, “Seahawks WR Dareke Young’s confidence surging at just the right time.” “Horton has impressed throughout training camp, excelling in many of the same ways as Young with speed, ball skills and explosiveness in and out of breaks. Horton is dealing with an ankle injury, but he has looked capable of assuming the role Valdes-Scantling was signed to fill.
“Young looks capable, too. Horton appears to be higher on the depth chart, but the two have similar traits, which is one reason they’re both in the mix to be the main kickoff returners. And for the first time since his rookie year, Young looks like he should be in the mix at receiver as well.”
Standout Performances From Tory Horton & Dareke Young Has MVS Fighting for a Seahawks Roster Spot
Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Seahawks this offseason. Seattle would take a sizable $3 million cap hit if the team opts to release the veteran wideout.
ESPN’s Brady Henderson reports that Valdes-Scantling will need to prove his worth in the final weeks of the preseason in order to earn a roster spot.
“Valdes-Scantling will need to start showing that he can still stretch the defense if he wants to hold off Tory Horton in Seattle’s receiver corps — and perhaps to secure a spot on the roster,” Henderson detailed in an August 13, article titled, “2025 Seattle Seahawks training camp: Latest intel, updates.” “Because for the first two weeks of camp, the rookie fifth-round pick has been consistently making plays while the veteran hasn’t made many.
“… Seattle signed Valdes-Scantling to a one-year, $4 million deal in March, reuniting him with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak after the two were together last season in New Orleans. Cutting him would leave the Seahawks eating $3 million in dead money, while saving the remaining $1 million in cash and cap space. He doesn’t play special teams, which could make it hard to justify a roster spot if he isn’t one of their top three or four receivers.”
