Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald Offers Grim Update on Edge Rusher Derick Hall

The Seattle Seahawks played most of their Week 5 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without edge rusher Derick Hall. The team could be without Hall for the next few games as well.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald didn’t have a very positive injury update on Hall during his Seattle Sports’ radio appearance Monday. Macdonald told co-hosts Mike Salk and Brock Huard that Hall might miss Week 6 and “maybe a couple games.”

Hall left Sunday’s matchup against the Buccaneers in the first quarter with an oblique injury. The Seahawks also lost cornerback Riq Woolen to a concussion during the game.

On Monday, Macdonald didn’t have an update on Woolen.

The Seahawks are adding Hall and Woolen to what is becoming a laundry list of injuries on defense. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon, safety Julian Love and outside linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence all didn’t play Sunday.

Macdonald didn’t have any clear updates on those three players during his radio appearance.

The Seahawks will visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 12.

Seahawks Could Be Without Derick Hall in Week 6

Seattle had a mini-bye week entering its matchup against the Buccaneers. But it still wasn’t enough time for the team’s defense to get healthy.

Now, the unit could miss Hall for multiple games.

Hall hasn’t had the same impact for Seattle’s defense early this season that he did last year. But in 2024, he posted eight sacks with 20 quarterback hits. The edge rusher also had 37 combined tackles, including six for loss and two forced fumbles.

This season, Hall has 10 combined tackles and four quarterback hits.

The Seahawks were sixth in the NFL in sacks entering Week 5. But they only registered one sack against Baker Mayfield with Hall mostly not playing Sunday. Hall suffered his oblique injury early in the first quarter.

With only the Monday Night Football matchup remaining in Week 5, the Seahawks are now tied for ninth in sacks.

Could Seahawks Be Without 5 Defensive Starters vs. Jaguars?

Jacksonville actually plays in that aforementioned Monday night showdown to conclude Week 5. Next Sunday, the Seahawks will have the advantage of facing a team coming off a short week.

But Seattle will have other clear disadvantages. The team has to fly across the country to face the Jaguars. It’s also possible five Seahawks defensive starters will not dress.

Macdonald seemed to suggest Love might have the best chance of returning. The Seahawks head coach said the safety “might practice” Wednesday or Thursday.

The team could also still receive a positive update on Witherspoon. The cornerback was receiving further evaluation during Macdonald’s radio appearance.

Witherspoon returned to play in Week 4, but he missed Weeks 2 and 3 after suffering an injury during the season opener. Love also returned for Week 4 but missed Week 3.

Both defensive backs were out again despite playing the previous week and having extra rest with the team’s prior game on September 25.

Woolen played most of the first three quarters in Week 5. But without their other injured starters, the Seahawks defense allowed 370 passing yards and 38 points to the Buccaneers.

Mayfield averaged 11.5 yards per pass. The Buccaneers defeated the Seahawks 38-35.
