Seahawks Named as Potential Landing Spot for Star Pass Rusher

The Seattle Seahawks have already made one big move on the defensive line this offseason by signing four-time Pro Bowler DeMarcus Lawrence.

Could another be in the works?

Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt remains unhappy with his contract situation and, according to ESPN, “outside team interest” in a potential trade is likely to increase if talks on a long-term deal remain stagnant.

While Watt, who turns 31 in October, may not necessarily be on the block, teams are surely keeping a close eye on what happens over the next few weeks.

Should he become available, how likely is Seattle to get in the mix? Opinions may vary, but at least one NFL analyst views the Seahawks as a strong contender for Watt in the event he is traded.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin listed the Seahawks as one of the top five potential landing spots, noting that Watt could help take their defense to the next level.

Does T.J. Watt Want to be Traded?

One of the NFL’s true game-wreckers, Watt had 11.5 sacks and six forced fumbles in 2024 and made his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl. He also was named Second Team All-Pro.

The Steelers have been busy this offseason, following up acquisitions of wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and quarterback Aaron Rodgers with Monday’s blockbuster trade in which they dealt five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins for seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ramsey, 30, is getting a $1.5 million raise from the $25.1 million he was already owed in 2025. Schefter reported that the Steelers are also extending Smith, 29, at one year for $12 million.

That surely caught the attention of Watt, who is entering the final season of a four-year, $112 million extension he signed in 2021.

Are the Seahawks a Potential Landing Spot for T.J. Watt?

The Seahawks signed Lawrence to a three-year, $42 million deal in March, adding him to a unit that already includes two-time Pro Bowler Leonard Williams.

Williams enjoyed a big year for Seattle in 2024, registering 64 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks.

The Seahawks were respectable defensively, ranking 12th in scoring and 14th in yards allowed. But as Benjamin noted, bringing in a talent the caliber of Watt would be a game-changer.

“This club could still use a bona fide sack artist; its defense might go from stingy to spectacular with a talent like Watt,” Benjamin wrote.

Dealing Watt to Seattle would also enable the Steelers to keep Watt out of the AFC.

Longing for a new deal, Watt skipped voluntary OTAs and the mandatory minicamp. Training camp is scheduled to begin July 24.

While it’s uncertain if Watt will report, teams are surely going to keep knocking on the Steelers’ door. The Seahawks, who have ample cap space, could potentially be among them.
