Shaun Murphy has called out a fan at the Crucible for a sweary comment from the front row during his World Snooker Championship first round match.

The Magician was in the first session of his clash with Fan Zhengyi in Sheffield on Monday.

There was little between the players over the first nine frames, but Murphy knocked in a brilliant break of 140 in the final frame of the session to take a 5-4 lead.

The 2005 world champion was not impressed with one spectator in the famous theatre, though, who criticised the 43-year-old well within earshot.

Murphy wrote on Instagram: ‘Just a friendly reminder…

‘If you’re sat on the front row in the Crucible and I play a shot that may not work for a particular reason, it’s probably best not to say “shit shot” out loud.

‘I’ve got ears.’

Ahead of the clash with Fan, Murphy said of his first round draw: ‘I’ve had great draws and awful draws. I think yesterday’s was somewhere in the middle.

‘I’ve played Fan Zhenyi a couple of times. We’ve always had good matches. He seems to sort of appear for a while, blitz everyone, and then you don’t see him for a couple of tournaments.

‘Hopefully, he’s played himself out in the qualifiers. Hopefully, the best fan has been left at the EIS.’

Murphy and Fan will return to complete their first round match on Tuesday evening at 7pm, playing alongside Judd Trump vs Gary Wilson on the other table.

Trump leads Wilson 5-4 after their first session on Tuesday morning before playing to a finish the same night.

The winner of Murphy vs Fan will play Xiao Guodong in the last 16 in Sheffield after an impressive 10-6 victory over Zhou Yuelong in the Wuhan Open champion’s opening game.
