Guerschon Yabusele‘s impending free agency continues to be a hot topic surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers. Daryl Morey could face an uphill battle in keeping the impressive forward with the Sixers long-term.
According to Michael Scotto, the San Antonio Spurs could show interest in Yabusele once he hits the free agency market.
After proving himself as a consistent NBA player, Yabusele is set to cash in this summer as an unrestricted free agent,” Scotto reported on June 23. “The San Antonio Spurs are among several teams expected to have interest in Yabusele during free agency, league sources told HoopsHype…The Philadelphia 76ers, of course, also have interest in re-signing their forward, league sources told HoopsHype.”
Yabusele had a strong season for Philadelphia. He was one of the franchise’s most consistent performers, which is why he’s earned the opportunity to receive a pay rise. In 70 games for the Sixers, Yabusele averaged 11 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 50.1% from the field and 38% from deep.
The Spurs are one of the few teams with cap space this summer. Pairing Victor Wembanyama with one of his teammates from the French national team would make sense. Therefore, it wouldn’t come as a suprise if the Spurs firmed up their interest in the coming weeks.
Sixers Will Struggle to Make the Money Work
According to a recent report from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Sixers could struggle to retain Yabusele. They cited the Sixers precarious cap issues as a primary reason why the franchise could struggle.
“With a trio of Sixers veterans — Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon — all expected to soon activate the player options in their respective contracts for next season, it looks as though it will be increasingly challenging for Philadelphia to re-sign beloved big man Guerschon Yabusele,” The duo reported. “The former first-round pick from France, who played last season on a minimum deal, is projected to have a strong market in free agency.”
Yabusele would be a significant loss to the Sixers’ rotation. Nick Nurse’s frontcourt underwhelmed during the 2024-25 season. Yabusele was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
Yabusele Wants a Consistent Role
During a recent interview with HoopsHype, Yabusele detailed what he’s looking for on his next deal.
“Now that I’ve been on the team where I played and a lot of minutes too, I want to be in a situation where I can play too,” Yabusele said. “I’m not asking to play 40 minutes a game. That would be crazy. But just to be in the right situation for me, for the team, having a goal that we can achieve and have a bunch of guys looking to the right direction.”
He continued.
“And if it’s with the 76ers, I’ll be more than happy. This has been a great, great season and time for me. The fans have been showing me nothing but love, even the organization. If I have to go back there, I’d be more than happy. And then if you’ve got to be somewhere else, I’d be happy, too. I just want to be on a team where we compete and we have the same goals.”
The Spurs are a rebuilding team. They will undoubtedly be able to offer Yabusele legitimate playing time moving forward. Philadelphia should still try to keep the impressive forward. However, it’s looking increasingly likely that Yabusele could be on the move during the upcoming free agency period.
