Stephen Maguire was left disgusted with his performance in a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Kyren Wilson at the UK Championship.

The Scot came through qualifying and was expected to provide a test for the world champion but was a very long way from his excellent best.

The 2004 winner of this event finished with a pot success rate of just 57 per cent and a high break of 32.

Wilson didn’t have to find his best stuff to score the whitewash win, but did look good at the end, making breaks of 71 and 86 in the final two frames, the only two half-centuries of the match.

Maguire was left baffled by his display, telling the BBC: ‘Rubbish, there’s nothing more I can say. Just garbage.

‘It’s a hard one to take, what can you do? Just go home and see what the next day brings.

‘I can’t explain it, you can’t explain that, it’s one of the worst performances ever. I’m struggling to believe how bad that was.’

The 43-year-old added on Eurosport: ‘I’ve no words for that. Well I have got a word, but I won’t say it.

‘Listen, it’s nothing to do with the run of the ball, I was garbage. One thing to be happy about, at least it wasn’t a best-of-19 because that would have been 10-0. At least I can go home tonight.

‘I have to keep trying. Obviously that match there, I haven’t got a word for it, but hopefully it’s a one-off.’

Shaun Murphy on punditry duty on the BBC said: ‘The 57 per cent pot success of Stephen Maguire, I’ve never seen that before. Who knows why he’s had such a bad day. We’ve all had them, I feel for him, but he will be back.’

Wilson, who will face Chris Wakelin in the last 16, felt conditions were difficult at the Barbican in York.

‘It was a strange match,’ he said. ‘Early doors both of us were going into the pack and not really landing on a ball and having to play safe.

‘For me, the table was so difficult to judge, I don’t know if that was what was wrong with Stephen today, obviously he didn’t allude to that. But I felt like everything was drifting to the right if you were playing it slow.

‘When you have to start hitting the ball harder on these tables the pockets are so unforgiving it makes the game harder and harder. I just had to try and stay composed.’
