Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is making steady progress through his concussion protocol. With the team entering its practice week, Max Brosmer looks more likely to start Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
The 24-year-old has appeared in three games this season, though not as a starter. Brosmer now has a chance to step in and spark the Minnesota offense if McCarthy isn’t cleared for Week 13.
Ahead of a potential start against Seattle, Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson spoke with reporters on November 26 and shared his thoughts on Brosmer being under center for Minnesota.
“We’ve got the utmost confidence in Max,” Hockenson said to the media. “Throughout training camp and the year, he’s mentally prepared himself to be ready to go. He has confidence in the huddle, and being out there and trying to be an option for him is really my job—to find space and get him into a role, in a rhythm of things. We have nothing but confidence in him and what he can do as a player. It’ll be a good opportunity for all of us.”
Justin Jefferson Also Backs Max Brosmer
Hockenson isn’t the only Vikings pass catcher who has faith in Brosmer should he get the start. On November 26, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson spoke with the media and shared his thoughts on what makes Brosmer a quality quarterback.
“I would say his ability to make reads and really, seeing the different coverages and seeing ways that we can attack them with his arm, he has the ability to really sling it in there, and he also has the touch to loft it into a spot,” Jefferson said.
“So being able to process information quickly would be just getting it in and out of his hands as fast as possible so he doesn’t feel the effect of the rush.”
Vikings Still Haven’t Ruled Out J.J. McCarthy
A November 26 report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic indicated that McCarthy is expected to miss the game against the Seahawks after entering concussion protocol. However, Minnesota has not officially ruled him out.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell added that McCarthy participated in a limited capacity during practice on November 26, working on individual drills, while Brosmer handled the first-team reps.
“[McCarthy has] cleared enough of the protocol to at least participate in a limited capacity today. That’s kind of part of the next step of it,” O’Connell said in his press conference (h/t Pro Football Talk). “This is not talking about a hand or an ankle or anything like that — we’re talking about his head.
“And it’s obviously something as a former player and just kind of thinking about it in that context, we want to make sure we defer to the medical team. But then, also, what we feel is best. And we’re still not in a place to declare anything yet. Just kind of listening to where it’s at right now and where it could get to.
“But we’re obviously going to be smart, both for what’s best for our team and what’s best, most importantly, for J.J. … And as the week goes on, we’ll be able to update you guys on what he’s able to do.”
